Rainy Thursday for Finger Lakes ending with some snow

Precipitation, mostly in the form of rain, will overspread the Finger Lakes today. Some wet snow tonight and lake effect on Friday will be possible.

Low pressure is moving out of the Ohio Valley and will bring a widespread moderate precipitation event to the Finger Lakes today. For most of the Finger Lakes, this means a rather rainy day today. Rain should move in by the middle of the day and may come down a bit hard at times. Total rainfall amounts should be half an inch or less though, so flooding is not a major concern today. Still, some localized areas of ponding are possible.

As this rain moves in, cold air will begin attacking our region, setting up a tricky forecast. While some of the computer models show a few inches of snow falling across the region, I believe the precipitation will primarily fall as rain today. Even if snow does mix in, temperatures should be warm enough to keep accumulations minimal.

The forecast confidence is below normal though, especially for the northern and western portions of the Finger Lakes. Accumulating snow is within the realm of possibility, but again, I do think this will mostly be a rain event.

Enough cold air will move in by this evening to turn precipitation over to snow as the low pulls away. A general coating to inch of new snow will possible as this happens. Lake effect snow will kick in overnight and into Friday, with some localized areas near the Great Lakes getting another couple of inches.

Lake effect snow ends Friday night as high pressure moves in, setting up a sunny, but chilly weekend.

Every day, I check the weather, and it is a great disappointment to find it has not been updated.

Sorry Bruce. I’m doing this all on my own and it’s been a rough week of sickness, for myself and the rest of my family. I’ll try to get an update posted today.
