Damaging floods are unfortunately ongoing across parts of eastern Cayuga County, where what can be considered a level 2 of 3 Flash Flood Warning remains in effect.

Flooding has washed out roads and even a bridge with the worst of the flooding between Moravia and Skaneateles along Route 38A.

The rain in this area is temporarily letting up, but runoff will continue to cause rises on streams. Additional rain is highly likely through the night, exacerbating the ongoing flooding issues.

The small lull in the precipitation across the south/central Finger Lakes is where the center of circulation is from an area of low pressure passing through.

Rain is moving back into the Southern Tier on the backside of this low, and rain will be common throughout the night across the area.

Northern and eastern areas will also hold onto the rain into Wednesday as the low only slowly moves out.

To see flooding this bad this early in the event is not a good sign for things to come tonight.

Additional flash flood warnings are in effect for portions of northern Cayuga and most of Steuben county, where several roads are also being forced to close.

It will be very important as night falls to be flood aware. Be ready to evacuate if you live in an area prone to flooding, and never drive through floodwaters, especially at night. Roads ARE being washed out in our area, and if you drive into floodwaters, the road may no longer be there.

Be careful tonight.

I’ll have another update around 8 PM.
