It has been a very busy evening across the southern and eastern Finger Lakes in particular as the line of storms gradually increased in organization.

By now, only the strongest parts of the line are producing lightning, but heavy rain and gusty to strong winds are still plentiful. A lone severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for northern Cortland and far southern Onondaga counites.

Parts of Steuben, Yates, Schuyler and Seneca counties are under what could be considered a “level 2” Flash Flood Warning, which is determined by the inclusion of wording warning of “considerable damage” due to flooding.

Already, several roads have been closed or washed out in those areas (the green icons with the houses).

Additional Flash Flood Warnings extend from Allegany to Onondaga counties, and more may be needed before the night is through.

The light blue icon with the three circles over Bath is a report of 1″ hail, while the dark blue icon with the broken tree to the southwest of there is a report of wind damage.

I have been working hard throughout this evening with my coding project and I am now extremely pleased to announce that new warnings are automatically posted as Weather Updates to flxweather.com. These posts include a graphic and information about the warning. I will be refining the wording of the posts over time to increase their usefulness.

Now, anytime there is severe weather threatening, you can be assured of useful, localized information available as quickly as the National Weather Service issues the warnings.

In a future version of the code, I hope to add radar data, but that is a whole new project in and of itself.

Outside of those automatic updates, this will be my final manual update tonight. Please stay safe tonight, as we are almost certainly not done with the flooding risk for several more hours minimum.
