After some midday and early afternoon light showers, the heavy rain risk will increase for the second half of the afternoon, mainly across the eastern half of the Finger Lakes.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms have moved north into NY state across Chemung and Tioga counties. These storms will continue to push northward, slowing their speed and gradually stalling out before dissipating late this evening.

The attached map highlights areas roughly south and east of Penn Yan, Geneva, Auburn, and Syracuse as the greatest risk for excessive rainfall and localized flooding concerns through the remainder of the daylight hours.

As I mentioned in this morning’s blog post, rainfall rates over an inch per hour and possibly over two inches per hour are possible. Slow moving storms may exceed the capability of the ground to absorb the rain, leading to pockets of flooding potential.

As the sun sets this evening, thunderstorms should dissipate. Any ongoing localized flooding may persist after the rain ends for a couple of hours.
