Temperatures will be on the rise for the next couple of days until a cold front arrives on Friday. This front will bring some light rain showers and a brief dip in temperatures for the weekend. Some very warm weather is expected early next week with more unsettled conditions culminating in the potential for heavier rain toward the middle and end of next week.

Wednesday

What: Sunny.

Sun-filled skies and a light south wind will help temperatures shoot up around thirty degrees today from morning lows around or under 20 degrees to a high around 50 degrees. Relative humidity values will be very low, so the brush fire risk will be higher than other days, even with the recent rainfall. I saw a report of a brush fire over the weekend in Cortland County, so it can still happen.

Thursday

What: Sunny. Some thin clouds.

Winds will be stronger on Thursday, still from the south, with gusts of 30-40 mph. The air will remain dry, though relative humidity values will be a bit higher than today. Overall, the brush fire risk is probably greater on Thursday thanks to the stronger winds and higher temperatures, which will range from the mid 60s in the northwest to the mid 50s in some higher elevations of the south and east. Skies will be sunny with some thin clouds mixing in.

Friday

What: A few rain showers, especially late.

A cold front will cross the region on Friday, causing temperatures to fall from north to south during the afternoon. There may be a time later in the afternoon when temperatures in the Southern Tier remain in the mid 60s, while the Lake Ontario shoreline is in the mid 40s.

Scattered showers will be possible throughout the day, but will be most likely during the afternoon and into the early evening hours. Rainfall looks like with amounts around a quarter-inch. Winds will generally be light, though may be a bit blustery south of the front at times.

Saturday

What: A few early clouds, then sunny.

A steady northwest wind will blow in the wake of Friday’s front. Temperatures will mainly stick to the mid and upper 40s as a result, though a few valley locations may hit 50 degrees. A few clouds will be around early on, but most of the day will turn out clear.

Sunday

What: Sun and clouds.

Temperatures will start to increase again on Sunday as light south winds return. Afternoon highs will be around ten degrees warmer than Saturday, mainly in the mid and upper 50s with a few areas hitting 60 degrees. There will be a mix of sun and clouds, but no rain is expected except a few stray evening showers.

Monday & Tuesday

What: Scattered showers. Warm.

Warm air is expected to surge in early next week with highs reaching the 70s both Monday and Tuesday. Both days will also have a chance for a few scattered showers, but neither day is looking like a washout. A few areas may even get through one or both days without any rain at all.

Later Next Week

The weather will become increasingly unsettled for the middle of next week with periods of rain and possibly a few thunderstorms. There will be a chance for some locally heavy rainfall. A cold front will eventually come through, restarting the falling-rising temperature cycle once again.
