Rain will once again be hard to come by this week, with the best chance for some showers coming Thursday night into Friday morning. Otherwise, clouds will come and go, mixing with sunshine, throughout the week. A cold front Monday will set up a cool Tuesday, but temperatures will quickly rebound and stay mild. The nighttime temperatures especially will be notably warmer than last week.

With the mild, dry weather and dying plant matter, the fall brushfire season is beginning. Over the weekend, there was a forest fire reported in the Adirondacks. Various sources reported different sizes, ranging from a couple dozen acres to several hundred, though the smaller sizes seem to be from more reliable sources. In 2024, a large brushfire burned just outside of Ithaca in early November. All that is to say that caution is warranted with this dry, warm pattern in place and the shift to the non-growing season. Thankfully, the light wind speeds this week should help reduce the fire risk.

Monday

What: Morning sun. Afternoon clouds.

A cold front will move south across the region this afternoon. Ahead of the front, skies will be sunny this morning. Some thin clouds will gradually move in, followed by thicker clouds for the second half of the afternoon. A stray spit of rain cannot be ruled out, but getting enough rain to even totally wet the pavement seems unlikely. Temperatures will rise to the mid and locally upper 60s with light winds starting from the southwest, but ending from the northwest. Tonight will start cloudy with slowly falling temperatures, but skies will clear after midnight, causing the drop to accelerate. Lows will range through the 30s tomorrow morning.

Tuesday

What: Sun and a few clouds

North winds will make Tuesday the coolest day of the week with most areas seeing a high in the low 50s. Both warmer and cooler pockets are expected based on topography, as usual. Winds will be light with speeds around 5 mph. Sunshine will mix with a few mainly thin clouds from time to time. The nighttime hours will be cool with lows ranging through the 30s again. Winds will turn to the southeast before sunrise.

Wednesday

What: Sun filtered by clouds

Winds will continue to turn to the south and become better established once the sun rises Wednesday morning. Wind speeds should generally stay under 10 mph, though. As warmer air pushes in, some clouds will develop, which may filter the sunshine or take over the sky at times. No rain will fall, though. Temperatures should bounce back to the mid 60s, though some cooler air may hold tough in the hills east of Cayuga Lake, where highs could end up closer to 60 degrees. South winds Wednesday night will hold temperatures to the mid and upper 40s across the south with low 50s to the north.

Thursday

What: Sunny, some late clouds

Thursday will see ample sunshine through the morning and into the early afternoon. Some late clouds will build in from the north. Winds will turn to the southwest and blow at up to 10 mph, pushing temperatures to near 70 degrees. The nighttime hours are expected to be cloudy with scattered showers, possibly as early as the hours just after sunset. While rain is possible, amounts will be minimal. Overnight lows will likely stay in the mid 50s.

Friday

What: A few early showers, then sun

Scattered showers may linger into Friday morning as a front passes through the region. Sunshine will then increase for the middle and end of the day. Winds will turn to the northwest. Temperatures will not be quite as warm as on Thursday, but highs should still make it into the mid 60s. Friday night will be slightly cooler than the previous nights, but lows will remain in the 40s.

Saturday- Halloween

What: Sun and a few clouds

The weather is looking like treats, not tricks, for Halloween this year. Skies are expected to be sunny with some thin clouds. Winds will be light and variable or calm, and highs should be in the low to mid 60s. Evening festivities will enjoy temperatures in the 50s. There is a small, outside chance for an alternate scenario where are few showers pass through, but even if these did come to fruition, they would be very light and spotty. If anything, such a scenario could make for an even milder evening.

Sunday

What: Sun and a few clouds

Sunday looks much the same as Saturday, including a small uncertainty that a few rain showers could end up popping up. Most likely, however, it will just be sunny and dry. Temperatures should remain in the 60s and will probably be a couple degrees warmer than Saturday.

Next Week

Rain chances should increase somewhat next week, but there may still be an overall lack of meaningful precipitation. Temperatures will likely stay mild early in the week, but cooler air is more likely late in the week, especially if some of the rainier model projections come to be.
