Severe thunderstorms continue across northwestern Pennsylvania and have spilled over into the far western Southern Tier of New York.
When I grabbed this screenshot, there were 3 active tornado warnings, including one in southwest New York that was identified as having a radar confirmed tornado on the ground. Two of the warnings were allowed to expire at 6 PM as I wrote this post, with the third set to expire at 6:15 PM.
Thankfully, the environment over the Finger Lakes remains less conducive to severe thunderstorms, though some isolated strong winds or hail will remain possible as these storms head our way early this evening.
Heavy rain and flooding continue to be the larger concern with models focusing in on the 9 PM to 2 AM timeframe for some of the heaviest rainfall. The models are also focusing in on the south-central Finger Lakes and Southern Tier, especially Steuben (eastern), Yates, Seneca (southern), Schuyler, Tompkins, Chemung, and Tioga (western) counties as having the greatest chance for rainfall amounts of 2-3+ inches overnight.
Nighttime flooding is especially dangerous with low visibility and people being unaware of rapidly changing conditions. Rainfall amounts of 2-3 inches will cause flooding, potentially significant, especially if it comes in a span of a couple hours.
This remains an evolving situation as thunderstorms move northeastward this evening. I’ll be sure to post at least one more update around 9 PM with the latest.
