Air quality remains poor across the Finger Lakes Sunday morning with most areas sitting between roughly 140-160 for the Air Quality Index.

This straddles the boundary between the Orange and Red levels, which are classified as “Unhealthy for sensitive groups” and “Unhealth for everyone”.

Practically speaking this is about the same as what the region saw yesterday.

Air quality will probably not improve too much this morning, though just having the sun come up and having the sun heat the surface may mix up the atmosphere enough to reduce the amount of red AQI values this morning.

A more substantial, but gradual improvement is expected later today and into tonight as southeast winds push cleaner air into the region and rain showers help wash some of the smoke out.

The rain should begin to arrive from south to north during the late afternoon and evening.

By the mid-evening hours, near-surface smoke should be mostly out of the region, leading to significant improvements in air quality.

By Monday, smoke should be pretty much gone from our atmosphere completely.

One final note on Monday… a line of thunderstorms will develop later in the day to our southwest and may try to work into our area for the very late afternoon and early evening. I’ll be keeping an eye on this with more information in my normal morning update tomorrow.

The data on my map comes from purpleair.com. You can see the latest air quality information at https://map.purpleair.com/air-quality-standards-us-epa-aqi?opt=%2F1%2Fs%2Fm%2Fi%2Flp%2Fa10%2Fp3600%2FcC0#8.23/42.663/-76.821

I second Margot’s appreciation of your air quality info. I start feeling the effects of poor air quality when the AQI goes over 50, and your AQI explanations and forecasts help me adjust and plan accordingly. Not to mention appreciating the higher quality weather reporting you’ve been doing all along (and I come from a family of professional weather watchers!)

Thank you. I so much appreciate these updates. The only place that gives more information than the current air quality.
