Quick Notes about the Snow Map

  • Accounts for expected snowfall from early Sunday morning, when the snow starts, through 9 AM Monday. There may be additional snow after 9 AM Monday, particularly near Lake Ontario, but that will mainly be lake effect.
  • A widespread general 12-18 inches is expected, with most areas settling into the middle of that range.
  • Locally higher amounts are possible due to the presence of very localized heavy snow bands with snowfall rates at or above 2” per hour at times. A few places may approach 20 inches in these cases.
  • A few pockets may end up just shy of a foot. This is most likely in the southwestern Finger Lakes.
  • As always, snow maps are only part of the forecast and are a general guide. To get a full idea of what to expect, please read my latest post, linked at the bottom of the page.

Administrative Notes

  • I decided not to make this snow map live on camera. It honestly would have been a pretty short and boring presentation since the entire region is shaded in the same color.
  • This is the first time using a new map template and a new color scheme.
    • The map template zooms in on the Finger Lakes and cuts out other areas. I did this because I do not spend the same time forecasting for those other areas, and I felt my old maps showing amounts outside of the Finger Lakes were less accurate for those areas.
    • I removed the city labels and amounts from being directly on the map and moved them to the side to keep the map clean. For instances where there are actual variations on the map, this will be more important.
    • The color scheme was revamped with accessibility for colorblindness and for gray-scale screens. This should be much easier for those people to read while also maintaining clear distinctions for everyone.

Drew, any insight on when the heavy part of the storm will hit Ithaca on Sunday?

The most intense will be throughout the afternoon and evening, but that isn’t to say that the morning won’t go downhill rather quickly, too.
