A little rain tonight
High pressure has slid off to the east of the Finger Lakes as an incoming system approaches from the west.
This system is well organized this morning, with one area of low pressure over Canada and a second over Arkansas. A frontal boundary connects the two lows with a healthy band of rain.
As the day goes on, the two lows will lose their connection as the Canadian part of the system races east while the southern piece lags behind. This should result in a general decrease in rain coverage along the frontal boundary this afternoon and evening.
Skies will remain mostly cloudy throughout the day today, but the daylight hours should remain dry. Showers will start to arrive from west to east after sunset tonight.
Most of the rain will be light tonight and will be on and off. Precipitation amounts will be less than a tenth of an inch.
Some drizzle or a few isolated showers may linger into Wednesday, especially during the morning hours.
Temperatures rise significantly
Between the high pressure and approaching system, winds have already turned towards the south across the Finger Lakes. Temperatures this morning are starting in the low 30s and should warm nicely despite the cloud cover.
The warmest temperatures will be across western New York and the northwest Finger Lakes. Rochester, for example, may make a run at the upper 50s late this afternoon.
Most of the Finger Lakes will see highs near or just shy of 50 degrees this afternoon.
Temperatures will mostly remain in the upper 30s or 40s overnight.
A continued south wind, plus some breaks of sunshine, should give temperatures a big boost for Wednesday. Many areas will likely flirt with 60 degrees Wednesday. Thursday will be even warmer, with low and mid 60s widespread across the Finger Lakes.
Rain will return to the area Thursday night and early Friday, which could keep temperatures from getting too excessive on Friday. The confidence in the temperature forecast for Friday remains below normal.
A cold front will plow through the Finger Lakes Saturday morning. Along with strong winds, some thunderstorms may be possible as temperatures quickly drop from the 60s back into the 40s.
