Cooler Air Returns
An area of low pressure over Michigan this morning will track northeast into Canada, gradually pulling colder air into the Finger Lakes.
Temperatures are mild to start the day Tuesday as the Finger Lakes remains in the warm air out ahead of the storm system.
Heavy rain is falling across eastern New York, while lighter rain and showers exist in the Finger Lakes. Missing out on the heavy rain is good news for the flooding potential, but ice jams will remain a concern through today.
Periods of on and off showers will continue. It will not be raining all day, but at any given time, somewhere in the Finger Lakes will likely be seeing some precipitation.
Temperatures will top out in the upper 40s or even near 50 degrees later this morning and early in the afternoon before gusty west winds begin to bring in colder air.
By dinner time, some of the rain will start to mix with snow as temperatures fall back into the mid 30s. Temperatures will continue to drop overnight, ending up in the low 20s by Wednesday morning.
An area of light snow will pass through the Finger Lakes with a coating of accumulation. Some areas will probably not see any accumulation at all, especially across the Southern Tier from Steuben County eastward.
Snow will linger over the higher elevations of southern Cayuga, southern Onondaga, and northern Cortland counties into Wednesday morning. A few of these locations could see two or three slushy inches.
Sunny Late Week Weather
With northwest winds over Lake Ontario, clouds will likely hang tough throughout Wednesday, even as the snow mostly ends.
A couple stray snow showers may linger over the eastern Finger Lakes but with no additional accumulation.
Temperatures Wednesday will top out in the low and mid 20s.
Skies will gradually clear early Thursday as high pressure builds in. Mostly sunny conditions are expected for Thursday, Friday, and into Saturday morning.
Thursday will again be cool with highs mostly in the mid 20s. Temperatures will moderate for Friday, with highs making a run at 40 degrees, especially over the western Finger Lakes.
Precipitation will not return to the forecast until Sunday.
