February ends mild, but March set to start cool

finger lakes weather forecast tuesday february 27 2018 sun warm
Tuesday will once again be sunny with temperatures rising well into the 50s.

Sunny, Warm End to February

The final two days of February will be very warm across the Finger Lakes, but cooler weather is on the horizon for the start of March.

Temperatures are starting Tuesday in the 20s and low 30s after a moonlit night.

Clear skies remain in place and temperatures will quickly warm once the sun rises higher in the sky.

Surface winds are turning more southerly while warmer air aloft is working in from the west.

The influx of warm air will lead to some high, thin cirrus clouds throughout the day, but it should still be plenty sunny.

Temperatures will rise to the low and mid 50s this afternoon.

Mostly clear skies with a few cirrus clouds will remain in place overnight and into early Wednesday.

Temperatures will slip back into the 30s overnight, but will again quickly warm during the morning.

Transitioning Weather

More clouds will work in on Wednesday as high pressure continues to move away from the region.

A couple of isolated rain showers may even push into the area from the west late in the day, but most areas will probably remain dry.

Temperatures will range from the mid 50s across the Southern Tier to near 60 degrees across the northern Finger Lakes.

By Thursday, an area of low pressure will begin to work towards the Figner Lakes from the southwest while a cool area of high pressure digs in across Canada.

As a result, Thursday will be cloudier with some light rain showers in the area. Temperatures will be cooler, with highs generally in the 40s. Areas further north and west will be cooler than areas south and east.

Wintry End to the Week

By Thursday night and Friday, low pressure should track just south of the Finger Lakes as colder air continues to settle into the region.

Initially, some rain may fall Thursday evening, but it should eventually transition over to snow for later Thursday night and into Friday morning.

There is still plenty of uncertainty with this system which will have a significant impact on potential snow amounts.

At this early stage though, the most likely scenario looks to be for a few inches of wet, slushy snow, that comes down heavily for a short time, not too unlike last Thursday.

More details will become evident over the next couple of days.

Some snow showers will linger into early Saturday before ending with a mix of sun and clouds through the weekend.

Temperatures will be slightly below normal for the weekend, with highs near or just below 30 degrees.

Next week’s temperatures generally look to be near normal.
