A few Monday showers, more rain Tuesday

Early Week Rain Chances

The weather will start the week mixed across the Finger Lakes.

Some morning sunshine will be replaced by some clouds that will move in from the northwest. A few scattered showers are already in the area and will continue as well.

Most of Monday will be quiet and uneventful. The sun should poke in and out of cloud cover. The rain that does fall should be light and brief.

There is a chance for some thunderstorms to pop up after 5 PM which could bring heavier and more prolonged rain to a few areas. Severe storms are not expected.

Temperatures will push to near or just above 80 degrees on a southwest wind.

Showers will increase overnight as an area of low pressure approaches from the southwest. By Tuesday morning, areas of widespread rain should move into the Finger Lakes.

There remains some question whether the entire area sees steady rain or just portions. How long the rain lasts is also uncertain. I expect most if not all the region to see several hours of steady rainfall through the morning and into the early afternoon.

The rain should taper off for the second half of the afternoon with a dry evening and overnight. A few more showers will be possible on Wednesday, mostly across the Southern Tier.

Temperatures on Tuesday will start the day in the upper 60s but should only rise a few degrees to near or just above 70 degrees. Should the rain not last as long or be as widespread, mid and upper 70s would be possible. Wednesday’s temperatures should reach the upper 70s and low 80s.

Some Late Week Rain, Too

This will not be the only rain we see this week.

Another low pressure system should pass through sometime on Thursday with another area of widespread rain.

Again, there are uncertainties regarding the path and intensity of the rain. The potential for heavier rain is higher than on Tuesday.

The most likely time for this rain seems to be during the daytime hours Thursday, but it could come as early as Wednesday night or as late as Friday morning.

The chances for rain should decrease for the weekend, though it is too early to declare the weekend rain-free.

Temperatures should be held down on Thursday and Friday as the low moves through and then drags some cool air in behind it. Look for highs to settle somewhere in the low to mid 70s.

We should then go on a warming trend through the weekend with some hotter temperatures possible early next week.
