Sunshine Bookends Clouds

Skies are clear across the Finger Lakes this morning with river valley fog in the usual locations across the Southern Tier.

Sunshine will continue for several hours this morning, but there is a fair amount of moisture in the atmosphere behind yesterday’s weather system. This will lead to clouds bubbling up during the latter half of the morning.

The afternoon should become quite cloudy for much of the time. No rain is expected, however. The clouds will quickly dissipate towards sunset, leaving skies clear again for the overnight.

Temperatures today will top out mostly in the low 70s. A few mid 70s may pop up in the typically warmer areas near I-90 and between Keuka and Cayuga lakes. Overnight lows will settle in the upper 50s and low 60s.

Winds will be breezy today from the northwest and west. Look for top gusts of 20-25 mph. The wind will then swing around to the south overnight with a slight decrease in speed.

Rain Chances for the Labor Day Weekend

The wind shift tonight will be in response to an approaching cold front. This front will bring a few scattered showers on Friday morning. An afternoon shower cannot be totally ruled out, but the chances will be lower.

No one should see heavy rain Friday and many areas may see little to no rain. Temperatures will work into the mid 70s as some sun pokes out Friday afternoon.

Saturday will be a quiet day with sun and clouds. Temperatures will be a bit cool with most places getting no warmer than 70 degrees.

Low pressure will move into the area for Sunday into Monday. A band of steady rain is likely for the area with a core of heavy rain. The timing of this rain and the location of the heavier core is still uncertain. Within the core, rain amounts of one to two inches will be possible.

The rain may linger into Sunday night or early Monday. Additional showers will be possible Monday afternoon, depending on how quickly the low pressure system can pull away.

Temperatures Sunday will be cool with the rain and clouds. Expect highs in the mid 60s. Monday should be able to get into the low and mid 70s.
