No Cold Behind Sunday’s Storm

The Finger Lakes will kick off the final week of October with sunny, mild conditions.

High pressure has built into northern New England behind yesterday’s rain and wind storm. The position of the high will result in light south-southeast winds for the Finger Lakes today.

Temperatures are starting in the 40s to near 50 degrees today. There are some patches of morning cloudiness, but these will dissipate as the morning goes on.

The southerly winds, increasing sunshine, and comfortable start will all contribute towards highs reaching the low and mid 60s this afternoon.

Wind speeds will increase tonight with gusts of 20-25 mph, still from the southeast. The stronger winds will bring in some moisture from the Atlantic Ocean in the form of clouds. The clouds and wind will keep temperatures close to 50 degrees overnight.

Tuesday will again be warm with highs in the 60s. The Southern Tier and Central New York will be near 60 degrees with more clouds than sun. Near Rochester, temperatures will push into the upper 60s with more sunshine.

On Wednesday, the temperature pattern will flip as a small front moves into the area, but stalls out and dissipates. Highs Wednesday will be in the mid and upper 60s for the Southern Tier and Central New York while the Rochester area remains in the mid to upper 50s.

That front may touch off a couple showers Tuesday night and Wednesday, but most areas will remain dry. Those that do see rain will only see light amounts.

The Next Fall Storm

A much ballyhooed storm system will roll into the Finger Lakes for Halloween and the start of November. Like the last several significant weather systems, we can expect a period of strong winds, warm temperatures, and bouts of heavy rain.

Showers will likely begin to arrive as early as Wednesday night and Thursday morning. These will be light, on and off showers which should continue into Thursday afternoon.

South winds will steadily increase through Wednesday night and Thursday, but will not become too strong yet.

The chances for rain and wind will increase substantially Thursday night. Of course, timing will be a significant question for trick-or-treating and adjustments to the forecast are likely between now and Thursday.

Still, at this time, it unfortunately looks as though heavy rain will arrive in the Finger Lakes during the late afternoon and evening with winds gusts exceeding 40 mph. On the bright side, temperatures at this time should be well into the 60s.

I will be watching the timing closely over the coming days, so be sure to continue to check back.

Rain will mostly end by Friday as dry, cold air wraps into the storm system. Temperatures most of Friday will be stuck in the 40s.

Some limited lake effect will develop off the Great Lakes. Almost all of this should fall as rain, and certainly anything that falls in the Finger Lakes will be wet, not white. In fact, there are no substantial snow threats for the Finger Lakes in the foreseeable future.
