Weekend Weather Forecast
High pressure has taken over our weather, leading to a quiet day to start off the new month.
Skies are sunny this morning throughout the region. Most places are starting out in the 20s, but pockets of temperatures in the 10s also exist.
It will remain sunny throughout the day with just a few thin clouds working in from the southwest toward sunset. These clouds will increase and thicken this evening and overnight.
Winds will be much lighter today than the last few, coming in from the south at under 10 mph.
Most places will end up in the mid and upper 40s this afternoon. The broad valleys of the Southern Tier will be near 50 degrees, and from the Genesee Valley to Rochester, low 50s are likely.
The wind will pick up a bit this evening with speeds around 10 mph. Higher elevations will have the strongest winds and a few gusts may approach 30 mph.
Evening temperatures will drop to the mid and upper 30s, then lose a couple more degrees after midnight.
An area of light precipitation will also move in well after midnight. Most will fall as rain, but from roughly Elmira to Ithaca to Syracuse and points eastward, some sleet or freezing rain will be possible. Predawn and early morning travelers in this area should watch for some slick spots or delay travel until an hour or two after sunrise.
Batches of light precipitation will continue throughout Saturday, falling as all rain during the daytime hours. Temperatures will be in the mid and upper 40s, with most places just a degree or two cooler than today.
South winds will persist on Saturday until they become calm Saturday evening. Precipitation will also depart by or shortly after sunset, leaving a cloudy but quiet night. Overnight lows will be in the mid and upper 30s.
Sunday will likewise be quiet and cloudy, though some breaks of sun will become increasingly possible as the afternoon goes on. Winds will remain nearly calm, or at most light and variable. Afternoon highs, however, will take a jump, reaching the mid and upper 50s.
Next Week’s Weather
Sun and temperatures will both increase for Monday as south winds reestablish themselves thanks to high pressure over eastern Canada and a strong low over central Canada.
Unlike today, there will be clouds that continue to mix in with the sunshine, but Monday should be much sunnier than the weekend.
Monday’s temperatures will challenge some of the warmest weather we saw last week, with many areas in the mid 60s. Some of the warmest locations, such as the Genesee Valley, may hit 70 degrees.
Tuesday will be almost equally as warm, but gradually increasing clouds will probably make it a degree or two less warm. Sometime during the late afternoon or evening, a band of light rain showers will likely make its way through the area.
This rain will be along a cold front that will turn winds from the south to the northwest. But truly cool air will be completely lacking, and highs on Wednesday should still reach the mid 50s. Skies will be cloudy Wednesday, but no precipitation is expected at this point.
A larger weather system will make its way toward our region next Thursday. So far, the track of this system is uncertain, with both a western and eastern path possible.
A more western path could lead to gusty winds and another sharp temperature drop. An eastern path could result in enough cold air for at least a chance for some mixed precipitation during the cooler parts of the day.
Obviously, it is far too early to say more, but it will be something to watch over the coming days.
One way or another, temperatures will likely take a small hit behind this system, but once again, it will be far from truly cold. A slightly mild, if not outright warm, pattern will continue for the following week, especially the latter half of the week.
