Warm today as clouds gradually increase

Rain Showers Wednesday-Thursday

High pressure over the region this morning will gradually weaken over the next 48 hours, allowing unsettled weather to return to the region.

Thin clouds are moving into the area this morning associated with lower pressures across the Ohio River Valley and lower Mississippi River Valley.

These clouds will slowly increase today, filtering the sun to varying degrees. No rain is expected today, though.

As the center of high pressure slides southeast, light south winds will develop today. Wind speeds will remain at or below 5 mph, but it will still be enough to boost temperatures, even with the varying amounts of cloudiness.

All but a few higher elevations in the western Southern Tier should break into the 70s today. The typically warmer areas will see mid 70s, while the rest see low 70s.

Light south winds will continue overnight as clouds continue to build in. Overnight lows will remain in the mid 50s as a result.

Rain will be possible tomorrow, but probably not until late in the day. The incoming weather system is weak and disorganized and will have a hard time overcoming the dry air associated with the high pressure.

Therefore, rain will probably not make it far into the region from the southwest until later in the afternoon. Some areas further north and east may not see any rain until near sunset.

The rain that falls will likely be showery, though some periods of steadier rain could fall into the nighttime hours.

Temperatures will be highly variable on Wednesday as a result of this slow northeastward progression. Parts of the western Southern Tier may not escape the 50s, while the Syracuse area may still make it above 70 degrees. Most of the area will see low and mid 60s.

Scattered rain showers will linger on Thursday, though the afternoon may end up seeing a fair bit of drying out. Winds will turn from the southeast early to the southwest late with speeds around 10 mph and gusts to 25 mph.

Highs on Thursday should be in the upper 60s.

Weather This Weekend and Beyond

Friday may turn out fairly quiet between weather systems. While a stray shower cannot be totally ruled out, most areas are looking dry at this time.

There will probably be more clouds than sun, but temperatures will rise to around 70 degrees, anyway. Winds look light and variable.

On Saturday, low pressure will be moving north along the coast into New England while a second moves southeast across the Great Lakes from Canada.

The exact tracks of these two systems, as well as their interactions with one another, will determine how rainy our Saturday turns out. Rain is likely in some form, though.

Temperatures will likely take a hit with this set up as well with highs in the low 60s both Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures Saturday and Sunday night will drop back into the 40s.

What rain may be lingering around the area on Sunday is uncertain at this time, but the morning should have higher rain chances than the afternoon.

There is hope on the models for a mainly dry week next week, though that remains too uncertain to count on.

If it does indeed remain mostly dry, temperatures will likely rise as well with 70s and possibly some shots at 80 degrees later in the week. Again, though, this remains quite uncertain, with a large spread in temperature possibilities showing on the models.

Hi Drew – we’ve got friends from India visiting and are hoping to meet them at Taughannock State Park to show them the falls and have a picnic. So far we’re planning to meet there at noon and I’m wondering if you have an estimate of the time you think the rain should hit there. Thank you for any extra help!

While possible that it could start raining there by noon, chances are higher that it will hold off a couple more hours after that.
