Weekend Weather Forecast

A few lake effect rain showers dot this region this Saturday morning and will continue to do so throughout the day.

At any given time, most of the area will not be seeing any rain with showers remaining isolated. Those that do see rain will see just brief periods. A little graupel could mix in with the heavier showers.

There will be a slight uptick in the number of showers later this afternoon and into the early evening. Still, even then, most of the time it will not be raining for most of the area.

Between showers, breaks of sun are likely, especially this morning.

Winds will be from the northwest at no more than 10 mph today. Afternoon highs will be near or just above 50 degrees for many. Higher elevations in the Western Southern Tier and especially in and around Cortland County will stay in the upper 40s.

Stray spits of rain will continue overnight, possibly with a few wet snowflakes mixing in over the hills south of Syracuse. Overnight lows will be in the mid 30s across the north and near the lakes with low 30s across the Southern Tier and Central New York.

A few last showers will be around through Sunday morning, but these should be few and far between. Most if not all of these should end by noon, leaving a mix of clouds and some sun for the afternoon.

Sunday’s winds will be from the north around 5 mph. Afternoon highs will be cooler than today with most areas failing to reach 50 degrees. Higher elevations may not get much beyond 45 degrees. Only the warmest valleys of the Southern Tier will get above 50 degrees.

Winds will be nearly calm Sunday night as they turn to the northeast. This will also remove the influence of Lake Ontario for most of the area.

As a result, lows around or just above 30 degrees are expected along the lake shores and across the north with widespread mid 20s throughout the Southern Tier and southeastern Finger Lakes.

Weather Next Week

High pressure and northeasterly winds will keep us dry early in the week.

Monday may still have quite a few clouds, but some breaks of sun are likely, and no rain is expected.

Afternoon highs will work their way back to around 50 degrees. Wind speeds will be around 5 mph.

Monday night should be nearly as cold as Sunday night with lows mainly in the 25-32 degree range.

Sunshine will increase for Tuesday, mixing with some fair weather clouds in the afternoon.

Wind speeds will increase to around 10 mph coming from the east-northeast. Afternoon highs will get into the low 50s for all but the highest of elevations.

Another cold night is expected Tuesday night with lows in that same 25-32 degree range.

Clouds will increase on Wednesday as a weather system takes shape to our south and begins to move northward. Some rain may be possible late in the day with chances increasing after sunset.

East-northeast winds will continue at around 10 mph with afternoon highs in the low 50s.

Wednesday night will not be as cold with the rain showers and clouds, but a few pockets may still slip into the low 30s. The chance for some snowflakes mixing in will also remain, though it is unclear at this time.

Thursday looks like a rainy day with highs likely held to the upper 40s again. If the low tracks further west, it may be less rainy and warmer, though.

That system should pull out early Friday, leaving a dry Halloween Evening as things look now. It will remain chilly, though.

A cold and unsettled weather pattern looks likely in early November. It would not be surprising to see some snow in the air at some point before Veteran’s Day, though getting the snow to stick early in the season is also a much harder thing to do.

My apologies for not having a post up yesterday. I was dealing with computer hard drive problems that had my machine inoperable for most of the day. I hope this special Saturday post will have you properly prepared for the weekend and early next week.
