Widespread rain persists over the Finger Lakes, but there has been an overall decrease in the intensity of the rain over the last 2 hours.
No new flash flood warnings have been needed, and all existing warnings have been allowed to expire.
That being said, there are still likely areas of ongoing flooding and associated hazards. Flooding hazards are enhanced during the nighttime hours, so do not let your guard down overnight.
Many areas are under a flood warning, not to be confused with a flash flood warning.
The main difference is flash flooding is fast and dangerous and can occur almost anywhere… whereas the type of flooding addressed by these other warnings are more focused on streams or areas of standing water.
Here is the impact statement from the Flood Warnings:
Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Expect many areas of slow moving or standing water.
Rain amounts over the last 12 hours are generally up to an inch, but with those locally higher pockets, reaching over 3″ just north of Skaneateles. That matches exactly with what I said this morning:
“Localized rain amounts could exceed 2 inches with pockets of 3 inches or more possible.”
Rain will continue to spiral through the area, gradually pushing further northeast through the night. Additional wrap around moisture may keep rain showers in the northern and eastern Finger Lakes well into Wednesday.
I’ll of course have my full morning update at the usual time with the latest thoughts on how Wednesday will unfold.
Be safe tonight.
