The Storm Prediction Center is monitoring the western parts of the Finger Lakes area for a severe weather watch.

The current probabilities of a watch in the near-term is at 60%. A watch will almost certainly be issued at some point today for the entire region.

As of 12:22 PM, I am watching a cluster of storms passing through the Rochester area and heading southeast. This cluster is along the leading edge of a highly unstable airmass pushing eastward through western New York. Instability in the atmosphere provides fuel for thunderstorm development, growth, and intensification.

It remains to be seen if this cluster will outrun the instability and weaken as it drops southeast into our area, or whether it will maintain is strength to kick off what could be several rounds of storms this afternoon.
