Thursday’s Rain Chances
The weather set up has not changed over the last few days. A stalled out front remains stuck to our south while waves of low pressure move along the front.
The good news is that the next low pressure system to move along the front should also be the last.
Located early this morning over Illinois, this low will be absorbed by a second low, unrelated to the front, dropping south out of Canada.
The Canadian system will push a cold front through tonight, sweeping away the stagnant weather pattern.
This will mean a few chances for rain today. Scattered light showers should develop by the late morning and midday hours. This initial batch of showers should linger until about 3 or 4 pm.
After these showers end, temperatures should reach their highs in the low 70s.
More rain will develop by dinnertime, so there will only be a brief break in the action. Some thundery downpours may develop especially for the southern half of the region. Severe thunderstorms are not expected. These should depart the area by 9 pm.Overnight, a few final showers will drift through as the cold front passes through the region.
A Break Friday
Friday’s weather looks dry with at least partial sunshine.
Some morning clouds behind the cold front may linger, especially in southern areas. Morning lows will be in the low 50s across the Southern Tier with upper 40s further north.
Clouds should mostly burn off before noon with a mix of sun and fair-weather clouds for the afternoon. Winds will be light.
High temperatures will reach the mid 60s, which is 5-10 degrees below normal for the final day of May.
Be on the lookout for a potentially stunning sunset Friday evening as some smoke from wildfires in Canada moves into our region.
Quiet weather will continue into the evening, but the chances for rain will return after midnight. Just a few scattered showers or maybe a thunderstorm are expected through Saturday morning.
Temperatures Saturday should rise into the mid 70s. Scattered thunderstorms will develop for the afternoon and will dissipate as the sun sets.
There will be a better chance for widespread rain and thunderstorms on Sunday as another cold front moves through. The timing of the front will determine how robust any thunderstorms can get.
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday look mostly dry behind that front. Temperatures Monday look to only be in the 50s while Tuesday just gets to 60 degrees. Wednesday will be much warmer with 70s returning.

How confident are you that it will be raining from noon to 1:30 or so Saturday in Waterloo? And how early will thundershowers begin? Specific, I know, but a few of us have been planning to stand outside there for a couple weeks now!
Meteorologist Drew Montreuil
As things looks now, it appears that the day will evolve with a batch of early-mid morning rain with maybe a rumble of thunder…then a break for much of the day…then thunderstorms late in the afternoon, mostly from the Southern Tier and southward. All of course subject to change at this point.

Hi, Drew – what is your best forecast for the Ithaca parade time of 6:00 – approximately 8:00?
Thank you! – Kelly

There will be showers and thunderstorms nearby and probably in Ithaca at some point during that time. I mean…it is the Ithaca Fest Parade. It has to rain!
