Quiet Friday and Saturday
The Labor Day weekend will get off to a quiet start across the Finger Lakes Friday and especially Saturday.
A weak cold front is moving through the region Friday morning resulting in some cloudiness.
Most of the shower activity with the front is to the north over the Adirondacks, but one or two brief showers will continue to be possible in the Finger Lakes as well.
The threat for rain will end by midday and clouds will let increasing amounts of sunshine through during the afternoon. Temperatures should reach the mid 70s.
Saturday will have a mix of sun and clouds with no rain expected. Northwest winds will keep temperatures near or just above 70 degrees.
The winds will not be very strong with top gusts under 15 mph.
Clouds will increase Saturday night as a stronger, more complex weather system approaches.
Soggy Sunday-Monday
The second half of the holiday weekend still looks quite wet, though the details continue to be at least somewhat uncertain.
It appears as though rain will start to move into the Finger Lakes late Sunday morning or during the afternoon. Initially, the rain looks light, but it should increase in coverage and intensity through the afternoon and evening.
Rain is likely from Sunday evening through Monday morning with some embedded downpours and perhaps a couple rumbles of thunder.
Just as the onset of the rain is a bit uncertain, so too is the end of the rain event on Monday. The rain could push southeast of the Finger Lakes early, leaving a dry albeit cloudy afternoon. However, it could also continue raining well into the afternoon, especially for the Southern Tier and Central New York.
Temperatures on both Sunday and Monday will depend on how quickly the rain moves in and departs, respectively. Expect highs somewhere in the upper 60s to low 70s with a small chance for mid 70s.
Total rain amounts should be between a half and one and a half inches for most areas. Locally higher amounts are possible, and a few isolated locations may end up with less than a half inch.
Back to School Week
Beyond Labor Day, the weather looks to continue to be active as kids, teachers, and staff head back to school.
Tuesday looks to have clouds and some sun with highs reaching the mid 70s.
The next system looks like it will come through on Wednesday. Light rain is expected with temperatures possibly holding in the 60s.
Thursday will be another break with sunshine and highs around 70. Temperatures look warmer on Friday but with scattered showers possible, which could linger into the weekend.
