Sunny, Mild Weather

A strong high pressure system is sinking south through New England, increasing its influence on our weather.

A few thin clouds are still in the area this morning, but these should be pushed south with time today. Sunny skies will be the norm through today and the rest of this week.

Winds will be from the southeast today due to the clockwise flow of air around the high. Southeast winds favor warmer temperatures along and north of I-90 and cooler temperatures in the Southern Tier.

This will be the case today, though everyone will have a mild, pleasant day. Highs to the north will be close to 70 degrees, while areas closer to Pennsylvania will be in the mid 60s.

Clear skies and light winds tonight will lead to significant cooling. With lower high temperatures, the Southern Tier will be prone to dipping into the mid and upper 30s. Patchy frost will be possible in southern Steuben, Chemung, and Tioga counties.

Further north, temperatures will be near or above 40 degrees tonight.

Thursday will continue the trend of sunny skies and warming temperatures. All but a few higher elevations should reach 70 degrees, and many northern areas will push into the mid 70s. Thursday night will be milder, with lows within a few degrees on either side of 50.

Friday will again be sunny, though a few clouds may try to sneak in from the south later in the day. Temperatures should be in the 70s.

Memorial Day Weekend Weather

By this weekend, our high pressure system will be far out over the Atlantic Ocean and a small, weak low will move through the Mid-Atlantic region.

Some moisture from this low may spin north into the Finger Lakes. The best chance for rain will be early on Saturday across the southern reaches of the region.

Additional chances for rain will come Sunday and Monday, but these just look to be a few isolated showers or perhaps a thunderstorm.

All three days of the Memorial Day Weekend should have ample dry time, sunshine, and warm temperatures.

Exactly how warm it gets will depend on the rain chances, but temperatures should at least reach 70 degrees each day and could push 80 if the weather remains dry.

That general idea will continue into the final week of May as well. There will be a few chances for showers, but no widespread, heavy rain events. Temperatures will run at least in the 70s, though a couple days reaching the 80s may also be possible.
