Incoming weather system

A weather system will swing into the Finger Lakes on Saturday with some needed rainfall in the midst of an otherwise dry pattern.

Ahead of this system, warmer air will move into the area today, Friday, on increasing southerly winds. Wind speeds this afternoon will build to 10-15 mph with a few gusts of 30-35 mph.

Clouds will also be on the increase, though for much of the day, skies will be mixed. The afternoon will gradually transition to a more overcast sky at times.

Temperatures will push into the 70s, ranging from around 70 in some of the higher elevations to the upper 70s in and around Rochester and Dansville. Most areas will end up in the low to mid 70s.

Winds and clouds will persist tonight, and a few scattered showers may also be possible. These will be most likely to the west of Seneca Lake. Nighttime temperatures will stick to the low and mid 50s.

More widespread rain will push from west to east during the morning hours on Saturday. The weather models have finally come into better agreement on the timing of the rain, and most areas should start to see rain before noon.

The rain will slowly move eastward through the region during the early and mid afternoon. By the late afternoon, only some lingering showers will dot the region behind the main band of rain.

Rainfall amounts will generally be around a half-inch, but some localized areas could see upwards of an inch.

Winds will remain from the south until the main area of rain passes. Winds will eventually turn to the west behind the rain with speeds of 5-10 mph through the night.

Temperatures will stick to the low and mid 60s on Saturday, then drop to the mid and upper 40s Saturday night.

Winds will turn to the northwest on Sunday, but cool air will not yet move in. Temperatures should reach the low 70s with a mix of sun and fair-weather clouds.

Next Week’s Weather

Cooler air will arrive on Monday as winds turn to the north behind a secondary, subtle cold front Sunday night. This front will have nothing more than a few clouds to mark its presence.

The winds on Monday will be light and sunshine will be plentiful. Still, temperatures will be held to the low and mid 60s.

Monday night is looking a little less cold than it has been the last few days, with most areas now expected to remain in the 40s. Still, be sure to check back with my next blog post Monday morning for updates on any frost potential.

After Monday, the weather will settle into a rather consistent pattern. Skies will be clear at night and sunny during the morning. By midday, fair weather clouds will start to bubble up and the afternoon will be partly cloudy. Late in the day, the clouds will dissipate, and the cycle will start again.

Temperatures will be slightly above the seasonal averages with highs in the mid 70s starting on Tuesday. Mid 70s are also expected on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday next week. Daily morning lows will be in the mid and upper 40s.

Even warmer air is expected to move in for Memorial Day weekend, but it will not be excessively hot. Highs look to mainly be in the upper 70s and low 80s.

Rain chances will remain very low into the holiday weekend, though towards Memoria Day itself, there may be enough humidity to pop up some afternoon thunderstorms. That type of hit-or-miss rain pattern should continue through the final days of May and into early June, with warm temperatures likely.
