Early Week Rain Chances
A few thunderstorms are rumbling through the southeastern Finger Lakes this morning and more activity is expected later in the day.
Once these early morning storms move along, the rest of the morning should be quiet. However, during the early and mid afternoon, some additional scattered showers and storms will bubble up.
There will likely be numerous areas that do not see rain today, and some that see multiple rounds. The individual cells and clusters will be small in size and should move at a steady speed.
A couple of strong wind gusts and some heavy downpours will be possible, but only the strongest couple of storms.
[1 PM Update] Portions of the FLX have been included in a larger Severe Thunderstorm Watch this afternoon. Included in the watch are: Cayuga, Chemung, Cortland, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, and Yates counties. Scattered storm cells are beginning to develop and will pose a localized strong wind and hail risk through the afternoon.
Outside of the showers and storms, the sun will be in and out of clouds. Temperatures will top out in the low and mid 80s and winds will be light from the south.
Showers and storms will quickly dissipate as the sun sets, and the overnight should turn mostly clear. Areas that see some heavy rain during the afternoon could see a little patchy fog. Overnight temperatures will mostly be near or above 60 degrees, but some upper 50s will be likely in the Southern Tier.
Rain will be harder to come by on Tuesday, but a few stray showers are expected. Again, the afternoon will be the prime time for these showers, though a morning spit of rain cannot be ruled out completely. Thunderstorms will be less likely.
Temperatures will be similar to today with highs in the low and mid 80s. Nighttime temperatures will range from the upper 50s to the low 60s.
Turning Hot
By Wednesday, the pattern will shift, and our region will be opened up to an influx of heat.
It should remain dry throughout the day with a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures will climb into the mid and upper 80s. A few urban areas could hit 90 degrees.
Thursday should be hotter, but there are some uncertainties. These start on Wednesday evening in the Midwest, where thunderstorms will be possible. These storms could persist through the night and arrive in our area Thursday morning.
Additional showers and thunderstorms may also be possible during the afternoon and evening hours. With plenty of energy from heat and humidity and some modest winds aloft, the potential for some stronger storms will need to be monitored.
Overall, though, it is a highly uncertain setup.
Even with showers and storms in the area, highs should approach 90 degrees. If it stays dry, many areas will push into the low 90s with some pockets of mid 90s not out of the question.
Thursday night into Friday will be very warm with overnight lows not making it out of the 70s.
Friday should be hot as well, with highs at least in the upper 80s. Another day at or above 90 degrees is possible as well. Currently, Friday looks dry, with sun and clouds.
Saturday is uncertain at this point, both in terms of precipitation and temperatures. Some models hold on to the heat into Saturday, while others bring the heat to an end with showers and thunderstorms.
By Sunday, cooler air will be settling in, but additional showers and storms may be possible.
Temperatures may head below average for a few days early next week. Near to slightly below average temperatures should persist through the first week of August. Rain chances will continue to pass through a few times a week.
