Rainy Weekend Weather
A slow-moving cold front will put an end to the sunny, warm weather we have been, bringing in cool, unsettled weather in its place.
Rain showers have entered the Finger Lakes this morning, but are most common in western areas so far. The rain showers will slowly spread eastward this morning and into the afternoon.
The coverage of the showers may fluctuate so it should not be a constant rain today for any given location. However, there will probably always be at least some rain somewhere in the region today.
The front will remain to the west during the daytime hours, allowing for a mild day. The clouds and showers will prevent it from getting nearly as warm as it has been this week, but highs should still break into the low 70s for most areas.
Late this afternoon and evening, there should be an overall increase in rain coverage and intensity. The rain may become widespread with embedded downpours, especially for areas east of Seneca Lake.
The heaviest rain should be to the east by Saturday morning, though lighter rain and scattered showers will continue to be possible even into Saturday afternoon. Eventually, the rain should diminish enough to allow for some late sunshine Saturday afternoon.
To summarize, rain will be possible at any time for the next 30-36 hours (from a 7 AM Friday reference point). The steadiest, heaviest rain will be Friday evening and overnight. Rain will increase Friday afternoon and decrease Saturday morning and early afternoon. Total rain amounts will generally be between a half and one inch, but with locally higher amounts.
Temperatures will drop to the low and mid 50s Saturday morning and should only rise a couple of degrees during the daytime hours.
Winds over the next two days will be strongest this morning and Saturday afternoon, with wind speeds around 10 mph. Today’s winds will be from the south, while Saturday’s winds will turn west, then northwest.
Saturday night should be quiet with some occasionally clear skies and overnight lows in the mainly in the mid 40s.
Cool and Unsettled
Low pressure to our north on Sunday will bring blustery winds and more showers to the area.
These showers will be enhanced by the Great Lakes but should be widespread throughout the region. The lowest chances for rain on Sunday will be across the Southern Tier, but even there, a few showers should pass through.
West winds will increase to 10-15 mph on Sunday with gusts of 30-40 mph. The strongest winds will be near and west of Keuka Lake.
Temperatures on Sunday will top out in the low and mid 50s. A few higher elevations, especially in Allegany County, may not escape the 40s.
Rain showers will pull out Sunday night, leaving just a few spits of rain on Monday and Tuesday. Most of these two days should be dry, and some areas may not see any rain at all.
Sunday night’s temperatures will drop into the low 40s for northern areas with widespread mid and upper 30s for areas south of the southern tips of the lakes. At least some patchy frost will be possible.
High temperatures on Monday will again be between 50-55 degrees with a few 40s in the higher terrain. The nighttime temperatures look a degree or two warmer so there may be a lower chance of frost. Tuesday should be a couple of degrees warmer than Monday.
Wednesday looks dry with temperatures creeping upwards toward the mid and upper 50s. A few places may manage to break back into the 60s on Thursday, but with rain chances increasing again, this remains too uncertain to be sure of at this time.
Late next week and the weekend look highly unsettled with plenty of chances for rain. The details, of course, are too uncertain to pick out at this point.
