Thanksgiving Weather Forecast

The powerful storm system that brought rain, ice, and high winds to the region yesterday will continue to impact our weather today, but with much lower impacts.

A new area of low pressure associated with this complex is developing along the New England coast, while the first low, now weaker, lingers to our west. This weaker piece will drift through the area today.

There will be plenty of clouds throughout the day today, with occasional showers and spits of drizzle. Unlike yesterday, the rain will not be steady or particularly intense, but will just be off and on showers. These will be possible at any point today.

Mild air will be in place with highs ranging from about 45-50 degrees. Winds will also be much lighter, coming from the northwest with speeds under 10 mph during the daytime hours, and at around 10 mph tonight.

Occasional showers and spits of drizzle will continue this evening and only slowly dissipate overnight. By Thursday morning, most areas should be dry, though.

Thanksgiving Day will start off with temperatures in the low and mid 30s. Clouds will break up, especially across the southern half of the region. To the north, some limited lake effect off Lake Erie will keep skies cloudier and maybe bring a few showers to areas near and north of I-90. Any shower activity will be most likely in the afternoon.

It will not be quite as warm as today, but temperatures will still be above average. Look for highs to reach the mid 40s for most areas with a few warmer valley locations sneaking into the upper 40s.

Outside of the Finger Lakes, there will be no major weather concerns for travel today or tomorrow. The nearest adverse weather will be some snow in Maine this afternoon. Thursday looks dry throughout the nation, except for a winter storm in and around Wyoming.

Cold Front, Chilly Pattern

A cold front will drop south through the region Thursday night and early Friday morning. A few scattered showers and flurries will accompany the front in the hours surrounding midnight.

Temperatures will drop to the low 30s by sunrise Friday morning. There may be a slight rise of a couple of degrees after sunrise, but Friday afternoon’s temperatures will settle in the low 30s.

Northwest winds will pick up Friday afternoon as well with speeds of 10-15 mph. These cold winds will also give birth to some lake effect snow off Lake Ontario. Currently, the snow is expected mainly across Wayne, northern Cayuga, and Onondaga counties. Some localized accumulations will be possible.

Otherwise, just a few stray flurries will be possible on Friday, mixing with some breaks of sunshine away from Lake Ontario.

Friday night will be cold with temperatures in the low 20s and upper 10s. Lake effect will linger, but winds will become less aligned overnight, and the band should dissipate by Saturday morning.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy, though some breaks of sun will again be possible. Afternoon highs will only make it to the mid 30s.

Sunday may have some early sunshine, with temperatures starting out in the mid 20s. Clouds will increase through the afternoon as a weak system approaches. Southerly flow ahead of this should boost highs to near 40 degrees.

This system will move through with some rain showers and flurries Sunday night, but nothing overly significant. A few of those may linger into Monday, followed by some limited lake effect. At this time, the lake effect looks to remain out of our area on Monday, but may spread into our area on Tuesday as some flurries.

Temperatures will take another dip behind this system with highs returning to the 30s. This general pattern of cool temperatures and weaker weather systems and lake effect will likely stick with us into early December.

There will be no blog post on Thursday morning in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Have a blessed and happy day! Blog posts will resume on their normal schedule on Friday morning.
