Late Week Weather

A subtle cold front moved into the region overnight as high pressure from Canada took control of our weather.

Winds have turned to the northeast ahead of this high pressure system, which has pushed cool air back toward the area.

There are still plenty of clouds around this morning associated with the front and downwind of Lake Ontario. These will gradually erode away as dry air moves in. The clouds may be a bit stubborn, and I would not be surprised if some areas do not see sunshine until the afternoon.

Eventually, though, skies should clear out for a mostly sunny end to the day.

North and northeast winds will blow with speeds around or just over 5 mph. These will prevent much in the way of warming today, with most areas only seeing a rise of 5 degrees or less. This will equate to afternoon highs in the low 30s with some upper 20s for higher terrain.

Clear skies this evening will allow temperatures to drop quickly, and the northerly flow will keep temperatures falling even as thin clouds move in during the overnight. By Friday morning, expect upper 10s and low 20s.

Friday will start with a mix of sun and thin clouds. Gradually, though, the clouds will increase and thicken, and the day should end on a cloudy note.

Winds on Friday will be very light, but from the south and southeast. This should add a few degrees onto the high compared to today with widespread mid 30s and pockets of upper 30s. Valley locations from Elmira to Dansville will have a shot at hitting 40 degrees.

Friday night will be cloudy and not nearly as cold. Overnight lows should be near 30, but some areas may rise a few degrees after midnight into the low and mid 30s.

Christmas Weekend Weather

A small weather system will act as a warm front and move through the area later Saturday into Sunday.

Clouds will be plentiful ahead of this system on Saturday, but most of the precipitation should hold off until the afternoon and especially evening hours.

Most of what falls will be rain, but a few eastern areas could see a little snow mixing in early on. Afternoon highs will mainly be near or above 40 degrees, but some higher elevations will likely stick to the upper 30s.

Scattered showers will persist through Saturday night and into Sunday morning. Overnight lows will only dip to the mid and upper 30s.

Showers should end by Sunday afternoon, but clouds will remain in place. Afternoon highs on Sunday will be in the mid to locally upper 40s with a gentle southerly breeze.

Christmas Eve will see more clouds and continued mild temperatures. Overnight lows Sunday night will only drop to the upper 30s and a few areas may stay near 40 degrees.

Monday is Christmas and it will certainly not be white… unless you are referring to the clouds that will blanket the sky, and they will be more grey than white, anyway. No precipitation is expected, however, as temperatures push near or above 50 degrees for many areas.

Tuesday will be much the same, though it may be a degree or two cooler.

Some rain may arrive Tuesday night, with unsettled weather highly likely for the middle and end of next week. Most of this will be rain with temperatures staying well above average, though cooler air will eventually move in and could result in some snow before the end of the year.
