January Thaw
The Finger Lakes region is between bouts of precipitation this Wednesday morning and most areas are at or above freezing.
Clouds and fog are common across the area. Fog is especially prevalent to the west, where temperatures are warming through the mid 30s already. A few spits of drizzle may also be ongoing.
The cloud cover will remain thick through the morning and into the afternoon. By the afternoon, the next batch of widespread precipitation will roll in. This will all fall as rain with no wintry weather expected at all.
Rain will be steady through the afternoon and into the evening, when it will then taper off to showers and end. Once again, fog and drizzle will be possible in its wake overnight and into Thursday morning.
Winds will be from the south today with gentle speeds under 10 mph. These winds will persist into the nighttime hour as well.
Temperatures will rise to the low and mid 40s this afternoon, then drop back to near or just under 40 degrees overnight.
Thursday will be mostly dry outside of the morning fog and drizzle. It will remain cloudy, however.
Winds will be light and variable, if not outright calm at times. Temperatures will be in the low 40s to the north of I-90, in the mid 40s throughout most of the Finger Lakes, and in the upper 40s in the broad river valleys of the Southern Tier.
Another batch of rain will pass through Thursday night, mostly after midnight. Some showers may linger into early Friday. Nighttime temperatures will remain in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees.
Stray showers will continue to be possible on Friday. Stronger south winds will develop with speeds around 10 mph and gusts slightly over 20 mph. These winds will drive temperatures up, with many areas near or above 50 degrees.
Temperature Roller Coaster
Winds will shift Friday night with a gradual turn to the west, then northwest by Saturday. This will reverse the temperature trend as cooler air builds back into the region.
Morning lows on Saturday should be in the mid 30s, with afternoon highs just getting above 40 degrees. Skies will be cloudy, but rain is not expected.
Sunday will be cooler yet as low pressure develops to the south and pulls cooler air into our region. Morning lows will be in the low 30s and afternoon highs will reach the mid 30s.
There remains a chance for snow on Sunday, which includes a small potential for moderate to heavy snow amounts. The models have been highly inconsistent with showing this, but it remains something I am semi-casually watching.
Cold air will continue to sweep in, peaking on Monday with temperatures locked into the 20s. Morning lows will be in the low 20s while afternoon highs make it to the mid and upper 20s.
It will not take long for warm air will move back in, however, and by next Wednesday, highs may be pushing 40 degrees.
Generally mild weather will likely continue through the end of next week and possibly into the following week as well. In addition to being warm, the weather also looks quiet and dry next week.
