Changing Weather
A warm front brought an area of predawn rain and thunderstorms through the region this morning.
There are a few straggling showers scattered about behind the main area of rain. Isolated showers will continue to be possible through the mid-morning, after which the day should turn dry until late.
Sunshine will increase this morning and much of the day will be a mix of sun and clouds.
West winds will also be on the increase, reaching speeds of 15-20 mph this afternoon with gusts of 30-40 mph for much of the Finger Lakes. Stronger gusts up to 45 mph will be possible near and west of Canandaigua Lake.
Temperatures will rise into the mid 70s for most areas. A few higher elevations will be in the low 70s, while the valleys of the Southern Tier will be in the upper 70s and low 80s.
A few showers will be possible again late this afternoon and into the evening. These will especially be likely across the northern half of the region in the time leading up to sunset. After nightfall, the showers will dissipate as they drift southward.
These showers will be along the cold front that will change our weather pattern. North winds will settle in this evening with much lighter wind speeds.
It will remain mostly cloudy through the night, but temperatures will still make it down into the 40s for all by the warmest pockets, which will be near 50 degrees.
Thursday will be mostly cloudy throughout the day, but rain should hold off until some showers move in later in the afternoon.
North winds will continue with speeds around or just over 5 mph. The clouds and cooling winds will hold most areas to the upper 50s for afternoon highs. The best chance for low 60s will be in the immediate Syracuse area, and in the Southern Tier valleys between Bath and Binghamton. Higher elevations will be in the mid 50s.
Showers will continue into the evening, eventually transitioning to steadier rainfall overnight. Low temperatures will be in the mid 40s with a few pockets of upper 40s.
Unsettled Weather
Steady rain will only break up slightly on Friday. Numerous showers will be spread across the region throughout the day, making it more of a washout than not.
Winds will be under 5 mph, but still from the north. Afternoon highs will only be in the low and mid 50s.
Most of the rain should end Friday evening and there may even be a few breaks in the clouds overnight. Any clearing will result in cold pockets with overnight lows in the upper 30s and low 40s.
Scattered showers will redevelop Saturday by the late morning and continue through the afternoon. With the cold air aloft, I could see a couple of brief downpours, a rumble of thunder, or even a little small hail.
Winds will turn to the south, so temperatures will creep upwards slightly. Most areas will still be locked into the mid and upper 50s, though.
Rain will increase Saturday night, then decrease gradually on Sunday. Most of Sunday afternoon may even end up mainly dry with some breaks of sun.
Sunday’s winds will be from the southeast early, then become nearly calm in the afternoon. High temperatures will be similar to Saturday, but maybe a degree or two higher if the sun does indeed make an afternoon appearance.
The weather next week continues to look unsettled, but confidence in rain on any specific day is low. If I had to pinpoint a day that looks to have the least chance for rain, it would maybe be Wednesday.
Temperatures should rise next week with highs at least in the 60s, but possibly into the low 70s here and there as well.
