Chilly Air

A compact area of low pressure is exiting off the coast of Massachusetts this morning.

Already, the clouds from this system are to our east and the region is starting off with sun and some valley fog.

The most important role this low will play in today’s weather will be to enhance the northerly flow in its wake. North-northwest winds will blow with speeds around 10 mph today with a few gusts around 25 mph.

Temperatures will only be in the low and mid 60s today as a result, despite ample sunshine. A few higher elevations may have a hard time getting above 60 degrees.

With dry air in place quicker than was expected yesterday, skies today should be sunnier than the forecast yesterday called for. There will still be a few small fair weather clouds, but the bulk of the cloud cover will stay to the east.

Clear skies tonight will coincide with wind speeds at or below 5 mph to bring the coldest night we have seen in a while. Lakeshores and the northern tier of the region will be in the mid 40s. Much of the southern half will see low 40s with pockets of upper 30s.

If you live in a particularly cold spot and saw temperatures near or in the 30s tomorrow, it may not hurt to be proactive with sensitive plants tonight, just in case some small patches of frost develop. This will be most likely in the western Southern Tier and in Central New York. Allegany, Steuben, Cortland and eastern Tompkins counties are most at risk.

Friday will be mostly sunny with a few thin clouds from time to time.

Winds at the surface in the Finger Lakes will be from the northwest, but a broad southwesterly flow will be in place across eastern and central Canada, the upper Great Lakes, and the Midwest.

This should cut off the supply of cold air, allowing our temperatures to moderate. Upper 60s and low 70s are expected in the afternoon as a result.

Friday Night will not be quite as cold, either, with most areas in the mid and upper 40s. A few low 40s will be possible in colder pockets, while lows near Lake Ontario will be around 50 degrees.

Weather This Weekend and Next Week

Saturday should have a bit more in the way of cloud cover as thin clouds build in ahead of the next weather system.

These clouds will probably still allow at least partial sunshine to filter through, especially during the morning. No rain is expected, either.

Winds will be nearly calm, but from the southwest. Northern areas will swing around to a north wind as a lake breeze off Lake Ontario sets up.

High temperatures will be in the mid and upper 70s with the warmer urban areas around 80 degrees.

Our next chance for rain comes on Sunday as another small, compact low pressure passes by. The exact track of the low will determine how much rain falls and when.

There is still even a chance that it doesn’t rain much at all, though that chance seems to be on the decline. A steady rainfall is about as likely as none at all.

The rain will exit the region by Monday, leaving a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures will into the 70s. Tuesday should also be dry, but warmer, with most areas into the 80s.

Humidity will increase toward the middle of the week, possibly triggering some showers and storms on Wednesday.

There will be a better chance for thunderstorms on Thursday as a cold front moves into the region. Showers may linger into next weekend with temperatures taking a dip into the 60s or 70s.
