Transitioning Weather
Low pressure over eastern Canada will drag a cold front through the area today with the promise of quieter, cooler, and less humid weather to come.
For today, however, rain is still in the forecast, particularly across southern and eastern portions of the region.
A few showers are dotting the early morning radar as cloudiness associated with the front builds in. The rest of the day will be rather cloudy, with just some occasional breaks of sunshine here and there.
Only stray showers are expected through the morning, but in the early afternoon, showers and a few thunderstorms will increase ahead of the cold front.
The best chance for some thunderstorms will be south and east of a line from about Wellsville to Penn Yan to Syracuse. These showers and storms will linger into the late afternoon before gradually pushing east.
There is a minimal chance for a storm with some gusty winds, but the severe threat is barely present today.
There may still be some additional showers to the north and west of that line as well, but they should be more sporadic and end by the mid-afternoon.
Winds today will gradually shift from the southwest this morning, to the west during the midday and first part of the afternoon, and finally to the northwest as the front passes through later in the day. Wind speeds will be light at around 5 mph.
With the clouds and our supply of hot air already cut off, temperatures today will mainly top out in the low 80s. It will remain muggy in the upper half of the 60s to around 70 degrees.
Tonight, any lingering showers will end and gradual clearing will take place. Northwest winds will persist, helping temperatures into the upper 50s and low 60s overnight.
Thursday will be notably different than days earlier in the week.
Skies will be a pleasant mix of sun and clouds and humidity levels will be low with dewpoints in the 50s. No rain or thunderstorms are expected.
Northwest winds will continue with speeds up to 10 mph.
Under clear skies, most areas should drop into the low and mid 50s Thursday night.
Weekend Weather Forecast
Friday will not be much different than Thursday.
A light northwest wind will continue, but may fall apart and become variable to nearly calm late in the day.
No rain is expected with skies a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures will nudge upward with highs generally in the upper 70s. Dewpoints will remain low and comfortable in the lower half of the 50s.
Saturday will have light and variable winds with temperatures adding a couple more degrees. Most areas should be in the low 80s with some mid 80s showing up in the warmer urban centers. No rain is expected with another partly cloudy day.
Much of Sunday will mirror Saturday with similar temperatures and sky conditions. Winds will turn back to the northwest, increasing slightly in speed during the afternoon as a subtle cold front moves through.
This front may briefly increase the clouds and provide a couple of isolated spits of rain. Most areas will probably stay dry, though.
The weather will stay consistent early next week as well.
Monday will have sun and clouds, a morning low near 60 degrees, and an afternoon high in the low 80s.
Tuesday will be similar, but confidence in it staying dry is lower as unsettled weather starts to creep back toward the region.
Rain chances will increase Wednesday and Thursday with some unsettled conditions possibly lingering into next weekend.
Temperatures throughout next week will remain in that low to perhaps mid 80s range. Humidity levels will increase as the weather turns unsettled.
