Late Week Weather

The Finger Lakes will be between weather systems today, resulting in a mainly dry day.

Sunshine will be common around the region this morning, though a few localized morning clouds or valley fog will be possible early on.

The sunshine will mix with fair weather clouds during the second half of the morning and throughout the afternoon. An area of thin clouds higher in the atmosphere will also move in late this afternoon and into the evening.

Rain is generally not expected, but a few brief spits of rain will be possible this afternoon, mainly across the southwestern Finger Lakes, say roughly from around Penn Yan to the areas south and west.

It will be hot and humid today with highs in the 85-90 degree range with dewpoints in the upper half of the 60s. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for Onondaga, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins counties.

Winds today will be light with speeds around or under 5 mph. What little breeze there is will come from the northwest.

Skies will remain partly to mostly cloudy overnight as the high-atmosphere clouds continue to move in. Overnight lows will mainly be between 65-70 degrees.

The chances for showers and a few thunderstorms will increase on Friday, mainly during the afternoon. A stray morning shower cannot be ruled out, though. Storms will remain somewhat scattered, so not all areas will necessarily see rain.

Severe thunderstorms are not expected, though some locally gusty winds cannot be totally ruled out. Heavy downpours will be possible thanks to a high moisture content atmosphere.

Dewpoints will rise into the low 70s during the afternoon, making it feel oppressively humid while also supplying the storms with ample moisture. Temperatures should make it into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees before storms fire up in the early afternoon.

Scattered showers and storms will also be possible Friday night, resulting in lows in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.

Unsettled Weekend, Cool Down Next Week

A slow moving, broad area of low pressure will keep the weather unsettled this weekend, particularly on Saturday.

Numerous showers and storms are likely on Saturday, with heavy rainfall once again being the primary concern.

Storms on Saturday will likely be slow moving with little wind throughout the different layers of the atmosphere. With dewpoints in the 70s, there will be ample moisture for downpours.

If the same areas get repeated heavy rain Friday, Friday night, and Saturday, there could be some localized flooding concerns.

Rain will be possible at any time on Saturday, but the heaviest, most widespread rain will come in the afternoon. Highs will be in the mid 80s.

The chances for rain are much less on Sunday, but not completely gone. Mostly stray showers are expected over the eastern half of the region. Temperatures will again be in the mid 80s with humid conditions.

Early next week, a cold front will move through the region. This looks as though it will be a slow-moving front, possibly bringing showers and storms on Monday and/or Tuesday.

Behind the front, temperatures should stick mainly to the 70s for most of next week with lower levels of humidity. Nighttime temperatures should be able to get down into the 50s for most areas at least a couple times.

Rain chances look lower during the second half of the week as well.
