Thursday-Friday Weather Forecast
After taking an exceptionally long time to do so, a cold front finally moved south through the region last evening.
The front is hung up just to our south, and a few areas along the NY-PA state line still are seeing dewpoints above 60 degrees early this morning. The rest of the region has dewpoints in the 50s with morning lows generally around 60 degrees.
There is plenty of cloud cover lingering thanks to the nearby front, though there are a few clear patches showing up as well.
This will continue to be the case throughout the day, with more clouds than sun overall, but not a completely overcast day.
During the latter half of the afternoon and into the evening, some scattered showers and perhaps a thunderstorm or two will develop over the southern half of the region. The closer to Pennsylvania, the greater the chances for rain.
Some of these showers will push further north during the overnight hours.
High temperatures today will generally be in the mid and upper 70s. A few valley locations between Bath and Binghamton may hit 80 degrees.
After nearly calm winds most of the day, a southeast breeze will kick up overnight. Along with the aforementioned showers, this will hold temperatures in the mid 60s overnight. Dewpoints will also push back into the 60s.
Scattered showers will continue Friday morning and into the first few hours of the afternoon. These showers will be light and sporadic, and not all areas will see rain.
Generally speaking, the southern and then eastern halves of the region will have the best chances for seeing rain during the morning and early afternoon periods, respectively.
Rain showers should move out of the region by the mid-afternoon with dry weather the rest of the day.
Southeast winds will continue with speeds up to 10 mph. Temperatures will be variable, ranging from the low 80s in and around Rochester to the low 70s in and around Cortland County.
Labor Day Weekend Weather Forecast
A strong area of low pressure over Canada will keep our holiday weekend weather unsettled and changeable.
An initial front will come at the area on Saturday, possibly with two rounds of precipitation.
First, scattered showers and storms will be possible during the predawn and early morning hours. These will weaken and dissipate, only to be replaced by new showers and storms during the midday and afternoon hours.
Locally heavy downpours and perhaps some gusty thunderstorm winds will be possible, but widespread flooding and severe weather are not expected at this time.
Rain will be possible at almost any time on Saturday, though there will likely be hours-long dry breaks as well. Continue to monitor the forecast as clarity increases if you have outdoor plans Saturday.
It will be another oppressively humid day with dewpoints up around 70 degrees. Temperatures will peak in the upper 70s.
Sunday looks to be the pick day of the weekend, with warm temperatures in the low 80s, but more comfortable dewpoints in the lower half of the 60s or even 50s.
Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds, though a few stray showers will be possible, especially late.
A secondary cold front will move through Sunday night, setting the stage for a cool Labor Day.
Despite quite a bit of sunshine Monday, temperatures will be pushed down by a blustery northwest wind. Highs will mostly be in the mid and upper 60s with just a few isolated locations hitting 70 degrees.
The rest of next week looks quiet with moderating temperatures. Highs Tuesday will be around 70 degrees after a chilly morning, and Wednesday should see mid 70s.
There may be some chances for rain next weekend, but that remains highly uncertain at this time.
