Early Week Weather

Widespread rain, albeit light and showery, has returned to the Finger Lakes after a two-week absence.

A small area of low pressure will pass through the region today and is responsible for the showers this morning.

Areas of light rain will continue to be common through the morning and into the first part of the afternoon. During the mid and late afternoon, the rain will become more scattered and less common.

Stray showers will linger into the evening and overnight.

South and southeast winds will blow with speeds up to 10 mph today. However, these will not be warming winds, and with the clouds and showers, temperatures today will be much cooler than recent days.

Most areas will see highs around the mid 60s. Upper 60s are possible in the Genesee Valley and Rochester area, while higher elevations will stick to the low 60s. Some of the eastern hills in and around Cortland County may not escape the 50s, with steadier rains lingering longest there.

Nighttime temperatures will drop to the upper 50s in the northern half of the region with mid 50s to the south and low 50s around Cortland County.

Tuesday will be rather cloudy throughout the day. The best chance for a few breaks of sun will be during the midday and early afternoon.

A few showers will be possible, mainly during the morning but also again late in the day as another system approaches.

High temperatures on Tuesday should be a couple degrees warmer than today, with low 70s north of and along the Thruway with mid and upper 60s to the south, depending on elevation.

Midweek showers, then a dry weekend

Scattered showers will be likely again on Wednesday. A couple rumbles of thunder may even be possible.

It should not be an all day rain, though there may be both a morning round of showers and an afternoon round.

Temperatures will once more be held primarily to the upper 60s and low 70s.

A few lingering showers will be possible Thursday morning, but then some sun should make its way out for the afternoon. Temperatures will jump back into the 70s.

High pressure will then push in from the northeast, keeping the end of the week and the weekend quiet.

Friday is expected to have plenty of sunshine with some clouds mixing in from time to time. Highs will be in the low 70s.

Saturday will be similar, but a couple degrees warmer, with highs in the mid 70s. Mostly sunny skies are possible Sunday.

This high pressure system should block tropical moisture from a soon-to-form tropical system that will be named Helene. Helene is expected to make landfall late Thursday or early Friday somewhere in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

The expectation is for Helene to be deflected to the west by our high pressure system, dissipating over the mid-Mississippi Valley.

I am totally excited. As an alumni of the class of 1965 of Charles O. Dickerson High School, I always get that way when I see something about good ole T-burg. This photo is stunning! Although I am not an expert in photography, the color, lighting and sharpness of the overall detail are amazing! She certainly has my vote! Jim
