Unsettled Weather

An unsettled weather pattern will linger around the region through the middle of the week before clearing out for a dry weekend.

Small impulses of atmospheric energy caught up in an active jet stream pattern will continue to bring on and off bouts of showers to the Finger Lakes.

Starting off Tuesday morning, most of the region is dry with just a few small blips popping up on the radar.

Rain showers will gradually increase later this morning and into the afternoon, particularly for the western half of the region. The rain will not be as widespread or steady as on Monday. Some places may even stay completely dry throughout the daytime hours.

Southeast winds will be steady with speeds at or slightly above 10 mph. Higher elevations will see the strongest winds with gusts over 30 mph possible. Lower elevations will see gusts of 25-30 mph.

Temperatures will still be on the cooler side but will generally be warmer than yesterday. Areas along and north of I-90 have the best shot at seeing 70 degrees or higher.

To the south, lower elevations will be in the mid and upper 60s while hilltops will be in the 60-65 degree range.

Showers are expected to be spotty overnight and into at least the first part of Wednesday. During the afternoon hours Wednesday, scattered showers and a few light thunderstorms may pop up. Again, there will likely be areas that manage to stay dry throughout this time.

There will be little change in wind speeds or direction overnight or throughout Wednesday.

Nighttime temperatures will drop into the mid and upper 50s. Afternoon highs Wednesday will range from the mid 70s around Rochester to the mid 60s in the hilly areas. Most of the Finger Lakes will end up around or just under 70 degrees.

The greatest chance for widespread rain looks to be Wednesday night into early Thursday. Once this rain moves out early Thursday, high pressure will take over.

Dry Weekend

How long the rain lingers and how quickly sunshine arrives on Thursday will help determine how warm Thursday gets. Temperatures should jump into the 70s throughout the area, despite winds turning to the northwest.

Friday will be sunny with some varying cloud types mixing in. Highs will be in the low and mid 70s with light north and east winds.

Some thin clouds on the fringe edge of what will become Hurricane Helene may make it this far north Saturday and Sunday. High pressure will block the remains of Helene from moving northward, so no rain is expected.

Both days will have varying amounts of sunshine depending on those clouds. High temperatures will stick to the 70s, with Saturday probably a couple of degrees warmer than Sunday.

Clouds may increase on Monday as a weather system drops southeast from Canada. This will pick up the meager remains of Helene, which will amount to little more than a slight uptick in moisture by that point.

Rain will be possible for the middle of next week as this works through our region.

Temperatures will likely dip back toward the 60s as the clouds and showers return next week. Beyond that, the spread of possibilities on the models is too broad to tell much.
