Falling Temperatures
Cool air is moving into the Finger Lakes this morning in two waves.
The first front is already through the region and has some clear skies early this morning in its wake. Temperatures and dewpoints have dropped behind this first front, but will do so again this morning as the second moves through.
The second front will also be accompanied by returning clouds and gusty west winds, which will last the rest of the day.
Winds will gust to or over 30 mph today, sending temperatures down a few more degrees by this afternoon. Most areas should end up in the low and mid 50s by the mid to late afternoon.
There will also be a few showers to dodge, though nothing long lasting, heavy, or widespread. Most of the day will be dry.
Winds will turn to the northwest tonight with speeds reducing. Temperatures will drop through the 40s, leading to areas of lake effect rain showers south and southeast of Lake Ontario.
Overnight lows will range from around 40 degrees near the lakes to a few mid 30s in Cortland County and the western Southern Tier. A few wet snowflakes over the higher elevations of Cortland County are not totally out of the question early Saturday morning.
Any lingering lake effect will end Saturday morning, followed by a reduction in cloud cover over the afternoon.
Winds will remain from the northwest but will be much lighter than today. Temperatures will mainly stick to the mid and upper 40s with just a few isolated pockets hitting 50 degrees.
Temperatures will bottom out Saturday night with clear skies and light winds. Mid and upper 20s will be widespread throughout the Southern Tier and into Central New York. The lake shores and northern parts of the region will see low 30s.
Temperatures Rebound, Briefly
Winds will remain nearly calm on Sunday with plenty of sunshine until some thin afternoon clouds begin to roll in.
Temperatures will make their way into the mid 50s for the afternoon.
Sunday night will not be quite as cold thanks to increasing clouds and a developing southerly breeze. By Monday morning, wind speeds may be around 10 mph with lows in the upper 30s.
A warm front will move through on Monday with a few scattered showers. The bulk of the precipitation is now projected to go north of the area.
The warm front will not clear the area on Monday, so afternoon highs will only be a couple degrees warmer than Sunday in the upper 50s. However, warm air will surge in Monday night with lows only dropping to around 50 degrees.
Tuesday will have a mix of sun and clouds, steady south winds, and highs pushing back toward 70 degrees.
A cold front will quickly move through on Wednesday with a few showers, sending temperatures back into the mid 60s on Wednesday and upper 50s on Thursday.
Like most of our recent rain events, Wednesday’s rain looks spotty and overall insignificant.
