Late Week Weather

The low pressure system that has kept our weather unsettled for days is now far to the northeast over eastern Canada.

A front left behind by the low extends along the New England and Mid-Atlantic coast, while high pressure is centered north of the Great Lakes.

For today, the result of this pattern will be a cool but overall quiet day.

Rain is still possible but will be limited to some spits and spurts here and there. Anything that falls should be light and not long lasting.

Otherwise, skies will remain rather cloudy as cool north winds blow with speeds up to 10 mph.

The wind and lack of sunshine will hold temperatures mainly in the 50-55 degree range, with a few warmer and cooler pockets.

Tonight will likewise be quiet, with lows dipping into the low 40s. A few of the usually cooler pockets could slip into the upper 30s.

Low pressure will develop on the frontal boundary along the coast tomorrow while the high shifts eastward over Canada. This will cause the low to be slow moving as it creeps northeastward.

There is still uncertainty about how far west the rain will come and at what time rain would be most likely in our area.

That being said, the models seem to be trending eastward, potentially minimizing the rain in our area.

The further east and the later in the day, the better the chances for at least a few showers. The best chance for steady rain to make its way into the Finger Lakes will probably be Friday night.

With the rain chances a bit fuzzy for tomorrow, temperatures are not quite as certain as usual, either. However, the range of possibilities is not too large, with low and mid 50s in a dry scenario, and highs closer to 50 degrees in a rainy one.

Drying Out and Warming Up

Any rain that falls Friday night should wrap up by early Saturday morning at the latest.

As the low picks up speed on its departure from the region, skies should turn sunny rather quickly on Saturday from west to east.

The sunshine will bump temperatures up to the mid 60s despite some blustery northwest winds.

Wind speeds will be around 15 mph well into the afternoon with gusts of 25-35 mph.

The wind will be lighter but steady through Saturday night, which should keep temperatures from falling too far and preventing any frost formation, even in the cooler pockets. Most areas will be at or above 40 degrees, anyway.

Mother’s Day on Sunday should be start to finish sunshine with few if any clouds whatsoever.

Winds will remain from the north but will be much lighter than Saturday. Highs will again be in the mid 60s.

Temperatures will get another boost for Monday as winds swing around to the south. Look for highs into the 70s with another day of full sunshine.

A few clouds may start to filter in on Tuesday, but rain is unlikely. South winds will continue lightly, nudging highs into the upper 70s. A few places may hit 80 degrees if it stays sunny enough.

Some scattered showers may start to pop up by Wednesday and into late next week. Widespread, long-lasting rain looks unlikely, though.

Temperatures will remain warm into next weekend with highs sticking to the 70s with a few pockets of 80s possible.

The forecast becomes less certain beyond that into the end of May, but an overall warm pattern is favored.
