Gradually clearing skies leads to areas of frost tonight

Frost Advisories

Cool air is firmly entrenched over the Finger Lakes, as low pressure over New England only slowly creeps eastward.

With the low nearby, skies remain cloudy throughout the region this morning. Precipitation is not showing up on the radar, but a few spits of drizzle will still be possible through the morning hours.

This afternoon, a high pressure system over northern Canada will nose its sphere of influence southward, nudging the low along and out of our picture.

There should be a gradual increase in sunshine, though some pockets of clouds will linger well into the afternoon.

It will remain cool with highs ranging through the 50s. A few eastern higher elevations may struggle to get much beyond 50 degrees.

Northwest winds will remain gusty, though not quite to the level of yesterday’s wind. Still, occasional gusts over 30 mph will be possible, especially this morning in the eastern higher elevations.

Skies will continue to clear tonight and most areas should see a period of clear skies at some point during the night.

As I mentioned as early as Wednesday last week, this will allow temperatures to slip back into the 30s leading to areas of frost.

There will still be a north wind with speeds of 5-10 mph which may help mitigate some of the frost. Areas sheltered from a north wind will be more susceptible to frost than those exposed.

As usual, topography will play a huge role in the temperature distribution tonight. Areas north of I-90 have little chance for frost, with temperatures mainly staying near or above 40 degrees. The counties bordering Lake Ontario do not have a frost advisory from the National Weather Service.

The rest of the region is under a frost advisory, but warmer areas along the lakes and in cities will be less prone to frost than the outlying areas and historic cold pockets.

If your location tends to see frosts, you will probably see some tonight with temperatures in the mid 30s. I would not be surprised to see a few pockets of low 30s, especially in the western Southern Tier and parts of Cortland, southern Tompkins and northern Tioga counties.

After the frosty but sunny start to Tuesday, clouds will gradually build back in. By the afternoon, skies should be back to overcast, though no rain is expected.

Winds will remain from the north at around 10 mph, holding afternoon highs mainly in the low and mid 50s.

Rain Returns

Though it will be chilly Monday and Tuesday, they will be the best days to get the lawn mowed before rain returns on Wednesday to kick off another stretch of unsettled weather.

The rain Wednesday may not make it into much of the Finger Lakes until the midday or afternoon hours, but once it arrives, a period of steadier rain is likely.

Steady rain will transition to on and off periods of rain and numerous showers Wednesday night into Thursday.

Between the two days, most areas will see somewhere around an inch of rain.

Temperatures will not get a boost with the incoming rain, despite winds turning to the southeast. The clouds and steady precipitation will counterbalance any warming that would have otherwise taken place.

Both days will start in the mid 40s. Wednesday may manage to reach the mid 50s before the rain arrives, but Thursday may struggler to get beyond the low 50s.

Rain will become more scattered Friday and into the weekend, but this will still be a rather wet time period. Each day should be progressively a bit drier, though, and by Sunday, the showers should be rather sporadic.

Temperatures will respond in kind, adding a few degrees each day. Mid 50s are likely Friday, followed by upper 50s Saturday and low 60s on Sunday. Each morning will start out in the mid 40s.

Next Monday is Memorial Day, and while a few showers may still be lingering, it will continue the trend of drier and warmer. Highs should at least be in the mid 60s, but upper 60s or even 70 degrees may be possible if enough sun shines.

Temperatures will continue to slowly increase through next week with highs around or above 70 degrees more likely by the turning of the month next weekend. Rain next week looks most likely during the middle of the week.
