Wet Weather Returns
A weak, yet broad low pressure system over the Ohio River Valley is trying to move northeast toward the Finger Lakes, but high pressure is making its progress slow going.
This is resulting in a slow-moving area of rain that will gradually move into and cross the region today, mainly during the afternoon hours.
While some parts of the western Southern Tier will start to see rain as early as the mid-morning hours, most of the Finger Lakes will not see the rain move in until near or after noon, and some northeastern parts may stay mostly dry until very late in the day.
Even as the rain moves northeastward, the leading edge may dissipate and reform to the southwest several times, making it hard to judge based on the radar when the rain will arrive for a given location.
By Noon, the rain should at least be on and off across the Southern Tier counties bordering Pennsylvania and up into the Genesee Valley.
By the mid-afternoon, areas like Rochester, Geneva, and Ithaca should be into the rain. Syracuse will probably not see rain until 6 PM or later.
Once the rain establishes itself in an area, it should fall steadily for a few hours and possibly longer. Rain will persist into the evening before tapering to showers, again from southwest to northeast, before midnight.
With the slow-moving rain, temperatures will be highly variable. The sooner it starts to rain, the cooler it will be. Parts of the Southern Tier will stick to the mid and upper 50s, while the Syracuse area approaches 70 degrees. Most areas will end up somewhere in the 60s.
Rain showers on Thursday will be much more scattered and a good chunk of the day will end up dry. The best chances for rain showers will come early in the morning, and again during the mid to late afternoon.
There may even be some breaks of sunshine here or there, with temperatures returning to near 70 degrees.
Friday’s weather is a bit uncertain, but there is still a decent chance it ends up mostly or completely dry, at least through the morning and into the afternoon. Highs will again be around 70 degrees.

Cool Weekend, Then Warming Up
Rain will increase again on Saturday as a pair of low pressures move through the area.
I am expecting it to be a wet, chilly day with most areas seeing highs in the 50s.
Sunday may have a few lingering showers in the morning, but should see some breaks of sun in the afternoon as high pressure begins to nose in.
The timing of the transition from showery to drier weather on Sunday is still a bit uncertain this far in advance.
Temperatures on Sunday will still be cool with highs in the low 60s at most. As skies begin to clear Sunday night, some of the colder pockets could flirt with the upper 30s overnight.
A warmer, drier pattern looks more likely next week, at least early on. Temperatures will rise into the upper 60s on Monday with mid 70s possible by Tuesday.
Both days look dry with abundant sunshine possible on Tuesday.
The rest of next week looks to be nearing or getting above 80 degrees. Increasing humidity with dewpoints in the 60s by the end of week will be enough to introduce at least a chance for some pop up afternoon showers and storms.
