Before the Heat Wave

A cold front yesterday will bring comfortable weather to the Finger Lakes today, but a major heat wave will quickly build in this weekend.

Friday will mainly be a quiet day with a mix of sun and clouds.

There are a few stray showers about in the far western areas early this morning, and a couple evening showers cannot be totally ruled out.

Temperatures will be mild in the mid and upper 70s. Dewpoints will be comfortable in the upper 50s and low 60s. Overnight lows will drop to the low 60s.

Heat and humidity will start to build on Saturday with dewpoints well into the 60s and highs well into the 80s.

There is an uncertain chance for some showers and thunderstorms, both during the morning and during the afternoon. Storm development will depend on how thunderstorms develop today across the Upper Great Lakes and Midwest.

Any storms that do form will have the potential for frequent lightning and strong winds with isolated to scattered severe storms. However, it may well be that no one ends up seeing much of anything.

Hazardous Heat and Humidity

Temperatures Saturday night will only drop to the low and mid 70s, kicking off a prolonged period of hot weather.

Sunday will see highs pushing into the 90s for most areas with dewpoints rising into the mid and even upper 70s. This will push heat index values near or above 100 degrees for many areas.

Skies will likely be cloudy with some filtered sunshine in the morning, leftovers from a thunderstorm complex that will dissipate over southern Canada. Sunshine will increase during the afternoon.

Monday will again start with morning lows in the mid 70s. Temperatures will be at their hottest with low and mid 90s likely. Dewpoints will remain at or above 75 degrees, resulting in heat index values at or above 100 degrees again.

No rain is expected on Monday with sunshine and a few clouds.

Tuesday will be more of the same with morning lows in the mid 70s, afternoon highs in the 90s, and heat index values around 100 degrees.

There may be some afternoon showers and storms popping up, which could provide a little relief from the heat… or just make it feel even more humid.

Tuesday night will remain very warm with lows in the low 70s.

Temperatures in the 90s are less likely on Wednesday due to an increased chance for showers and storms. It will remain very humid, though, and heat index values will be well into the 90s.

This is a prolonged, intense heat event early in the season following a long period of cool weather. The National Weather Service’s experimental Heat Risk tool has most of the area in the highest level of impact, labeled Extreme.

This means the heat wave will have an impact on everyone and poses a serious threat to vulnerable populations.

The heat should lessen by late next week with highs closer to 80 degrees. The weather is looking unsettled late next week and into the weekend with showers and thunderstorms likely.

This morning I was looking up the law the Governor signed that mandates that schools can’t have kids in classrooms with temps at 88 degrees and above. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle this. I’m watching my child’s district on this – first real test.
