Heat Wave
Today will be the peak day of the current heat wave, with dangerously high temperatures and humidity levels.
Temperatures will rapidly increase this morning under mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. The only clouds that are expected will be some thin clouds high in the atmosphere that will not do much to block the sun.
No rain is expected today with high pressure overhead and in firm control of our weather.
Temperatures will range through the low and mid 90s, though a few isolated hot-spots could push into the upper 90s.
Humidity levels will be high with dewpoints in the mid and locally upper 70s.
This will produce heat index values in the 100s, possibly as high as 110 degrees in some areas.
Urban areas, the I-90 corridor, and the broad valleys of the Southern Tier will have the highest heat index values. This includes Syracuse, Auburn, Geneva, Rochester, Dansville, Ithaca, and Elmira.
The coolest areas will still see heat index values climb to the mid and upper 90s to near 100 degrees.
Heat stress is cumulative, so the combination of yesterday’s heat, the very warm overnight, and today’s worse heat is a hazardous and dangerous combination. Everyone should be taking precautions with this type of heat.
Tonight will remain very warm with lows generally in the mid 70s.
Tuesday will be hot as well, but both temperatures and dewpoints are expected to be a bit lower than today. This should keep most areas below 95 degrees on the thermometer with heat index values in the 90s and low 100s.
Again, heat stress is cumulative, so just because it is marginally less intense tomorrow does not mean the risk is substantially less.
There may be a few late showers or storms, but these look to be quite sporadic.

Unsettled Weather
The heat will abate by Wednesday with morning lows in the upper 60s and afternoon highs in the low and mid 80s.
Thunderstorm chances will increase, but once again, the details of when and where storms may pop up are complicated and uncertain.
This pattern will hold true for the rest of the week, with rain chances daily but dependent on energy from upstream thunderstorms the previous day and night and the presence of any small atmospheric disturbances.
At this time, Thursday’s best chance for rain looks to be in the morning, while Friday’s best chance may be late in the day. Off and on showers and storms are possible on Saturday, but confidence is especially low by then.
Temperatures will settle in a warm and muggy pattern but will not be excessive, like early in the week. Daily lows will be in the mid 60s while afternoon highs will be in the low 80s.
Next week, the unsettled pattern continues with a possibility for temperatures to dip a bit more. There are no signs of any major heat waves like what we are currently seeing through at least the first week of July.

Thank you so much for keeping us informed. I do not tolerate heat well. I am looking forward to Wednesday.
