Early Week Weather

A cold front brought rain to parts of the Finger Lakes on Sunday and Sunday night.

This front is still hanging around the area but is becoming less defined. Over the next couple of days, it will slowly dissipate.

Scattered showers will remain in the forecast even into early Wednesday morning, but most of these will be small, brief showers that do not produce a lot of rain.

The best chance for these showers will be this afternoon, followed by during the daytime hours on Tuesday. Not everyone will see rain between now and Wednesday, and most of the time it will not be raining, even for those that see multiple showers.

At most, a few places may see around a quarter of an inch of rainfall between now and Wednesday morning. This will be most likely near Lake Ontario, where lake enhanced showers are expected.

Cloud cover will be variable, with mornings seeing more sunshine than the afternoons. Overnight periods will turn mostly clear with just some occasional passing clouds.

Winds will be a touch on the blustery side throughout this three-day period, coming in from the west-northwest and northwest each day. Wind speeds will be around 10 mph with gusts of 20-25 mph, with the strongest winds coming during the afternoon hours. Lighter winds near 5 mph are expected at night.

Most areas should still manage to reach the 70s today, though some higher elevations will be limited to the upper 60s.

Temperatures tonight will be in the upper 40s for areas south of the southern tips of the Finger Lakes. Near the lakes and further north, low and mid 50s are expected.

Tuesday will see fewer areas getting above 70 degrees, though most valleys and flatlands should at least reach 70. Hilly terrain will see upper and even mid 60s for highs.

Tuesday night will be colder than tonight, with only the immediate lakeshores and Thruway corridor managing to stay at or slightly above 50 degrees. Throughout the Southern Tier, mid 40s are likely overnight.

Wednesday will be just a degree or two cooler than Tuesday for most areas, with highs ranging from the mid 60s to just above 70 degrees.

Late Week, Labor Day Weekend Weather

High pressure will slide through the area Wednesday afternoon through Thursday, ending the already small chances for rain showers.

As the high passes through, winds will turn to the south Wednesday night into Thursday. This will lead to a slight bump in temperatures.

Most areas will start Thursday somewhere close to 50 degrees, with upper 40s to the south and low 50s to the north.

Thursday should be dry with a mix of sun and clouds. South and southwest winds may approach 10 mph at times, especially west of Seneca Lake. The Genesee Valley and Rochester areas may see winds over 10 mph.

Temperatures will return to the 70s for all but a few of the highest hilltops. Mid 70s are expected for most lower and mid-elevation locations.

The next cold front will roll in overnight Thursday into Friday. Numerous showers and a few thunderstorms are likely. While these may be on and off throughout the day, rainfall amounts generally look to be near or under a half inch.

Scattered showers are likely to continue into Friday night and even Saturday as low pressure associated with the front passes by.

Winds will pick up, coming from the south at or above 10 mph on Friday, and then from the northwest at similar speeds on Saturday.

The numerous showers will keep temperatures down on Friday, with highs possibly sticking to the mid 60s. Saturday will not be much warmer, with upper 60s for most. Temperatures Friday night may slide all the way back into the mid 40s for most.

Sunday looks a bit warmer with highs in the low 70s. A few scattered showers will remain, but it should not be a washout by any means.

Labor Day next Monday looks sunny and dry with highs in the mid 70s.

Temperatures should go on a warming trend through the first week of September, and there may even be a couple of days when 80s return to the area.
