Scattered Showers

Areas of lake effect rain showers enhanced by occasional small weather disturbances will continue for the next few days.

This does not mean it will be raining all the time, but there are a few windows where rain will become more likely.

One such window should develop this afternoon and early this evening as one of those disturbances swings through. Before then, rain across the Finger Lakes will be limited to a few stray showers, mainly over the western areas.

The rain later today will remain scattered and a few areas may dodge the showers altogether. Most areas should see a little rain, and a few pockets may see some steadier showers or frequent on and off showers. Most of this activity will taper off during the latter half of the evening.

Winds will turn from the southwest early this morning to the west the rest of the day. Wind speeds will be strongest in the late morning and midday, clocking in around 15 mph with a few gusts around 30 mph. Wind speeds will be slightly lower in the afternoon.

Temperatures will be similar to yesterday with mid 50s across the northern areas and in the broad valley locations with low 50s most other places. The western Southern Tier will stay in the mid and upper 40s.

Most areas should dip into the 30s tonight. Cold pockets across the south will reach the low 30s, but mid and upper 30s will be much more widespread.

Friday will follow a similar pattern to today with another afternoon disturbance passing through. Stray showers will be possible ahead of that, but the best chance for rain will be in the afternoon. Scattered showers will continue overnight, especially southeast of Lake Ontario.

Winds on Friday will start from the west and end from the northwest. Wind speeds will be near or under 10 mph.

Afternoon highs will only reach the mid 50s in the broad valleys from Dansville to Elmira to Owego with low 50s most other areas. Some hilltops around Cortland County may not reach 50 degrees, and the western Southern Tier will again stick to the mid and upper 40s.

Friday night’s temperatures will be similar to tonight with mid and upper 30s for most with a few colder pockets across the southern areas.

Some limited lake effect will persist into Saturday with a few showers lingering into the afternoon, especially across Wayne, northern Cayuga, and Onondaga counties.

Winds will remain from the northwest under 10 mph. Afternoon highs will lose a couple more degrees with plenty of upper 40s in mid and higher elevations and temperatures barely above 50 degrees in the typically warmer valley and urban locations.

High Pressure Builds In

A few spits of rain will be possible early Sunday morning, mainly in the lake effect prone areas southeast of Lake Ontario. Otherwise, there should be a mix of sun and clouds.

Temperatures on Sunday will remain cool. Morning lows will be in the low and mid 30s with a few cold pockets slipping into the upper 20s. Afternoon highs will mostly be near or under 50 degrees with a few warm pockets in the low 50s.

Winds will be nearly calm in the morning before picking up at around 5 mph from the north and northwest.

Clearing skies and calm winds associated with high pressure will allow temperatures to fall even further Sunday night. By sunrise Monday, most areas across the south will be in the mid and upper 20s. Even the immediate lakeshores may dip below the freezing mark.

Monday will have a mix of sun and clouds. Afternoon highs will be similar to Saturday and Sunday, averaging out around 50 degrees.

Another cold night is expected Monday night with Tuesday morning basically matching Monday morning.

Likewise, the daytime hours Tuesday will be similar to Monday as well with a mix of sun and clouds. Afternoon highs may add a degree or two, but no more.

Winds both days will be easterly, with light winds Monday and increasing winds on Tuesday.

Once we get to Wednesday, the weather pattern across eastern North American and the western Atlantic becomes quite complicated. It remains too early to tell what this will mean for our weather during the second half of next week.

Part of the puzzle will be Tropical Storm Melissa, which is stalled out in the Caribbean Sea but should eventually cross Cuba and end up somewhere in the western Atlantic Ocean. Another piece of the puzzle will be an active jet stream across North America.

Overall, the pattern at least favors more cool weather… so plan those Halloween costumes (next Friday) accordingly.
