Widespread snow arrives overnight, continues through Tuesday morning

Some light lake effect snow showers are scattered about the Finger Lakes early this morning.

Most of these will dissipate as the morning goes on, with just a few stray snowflakes persisting into the afternoon. Only a light coating of accumulation is expected.

Otherwise, there will be some gaps in the clouds this morning, allowing a little sunshine here and there.

Clouds will thicken back up this afternoon out ahead of our next weather maker.

Northwest winds will persist into the early afternoon before becoming light and variable later in the day. By the early evening, a light southeast wind will develop.

Those winds will ensure it remains a chilly day with most areas near or below 30 degrees for an afternoon high.

This evening will be cloudy with southeast winds slowly picking up some speed. No precipitation is expected before midnight.

Temperatures will drop to the mid 20s this evening, then mainly hold steady overnight.

Widespread snow will move in during the first half of the overnight and become steady well before dawn.

The snow will be light to moderate and will continue through the morning commute and much of the morning hours. The snow will taper from west to east around midday, with some eastern areas seeing lingering snow showers well into the afternoon.

Snow amounts will generally be between 2-5 inches throughout the region. A few higher elevations in the east could see around or slightly over 6 inches.

Expect snowy road conditions throughout the morning hours tomorrow, especially for the morning commute. Allow for some extra time on the roads.

Winds will be out of the south through the morning hours before becoming nearly calm for a time in the afternoon, then picking back up from the northwest. Wind speeds will be gentle, generally less than 10 mph.

A few stray lake effect flurries will be possible Tuesday evening, but overnight, winds will swing back to the southwest, keeping the nighttime snow very minimal.

Temperatures on Tuesday will reach the low and mid 30s before dropping back to the upper 10s and low 20s Tuesday night.

Staying Chilly

Wednesday will be a quiet day with clouds and some breaks of sunshine. No precipitation is expected.

Winds will remain out of the south or southwest with speeds up to 10 mph. Afternoon highs will generally be in the mid 30s.

Southerly winds will remain through Wednesday night with lows in the mid and upper 20s.

A cold front will move through Thursday morning with some snow showers or brief squalls. Some lake effect will set up behind the front during the afternoon and evening hours.

Most areas should see only minor accumulations on Thursday, but the squall potential will need to be monitored for those on the roads.

Winds behind the front will be blustery with gusts from the northwest near or over 30 mph. Temperatures will peak near 30 degrees in the morning, then drop during the afternoon.

The wind will drop Thursday evening, then become light and variable overnight. Some breaks in the clouds will develop, and temperatures will slide all the way into the single digits for many areas.

Friday will be quiet and cool with clouds, some sun, and highs in the mid and upper 20s.

Snow showers will be possible this weekend with highs returning to the low and mid 30s.

Next week will also be cold with some occasional light snow showers. Most days will have highs near or below 30 degrees.
