Windy Weather Through Friday
A persistent southerly flow is pushing milder air into the Finger Lakes.
Temperatures have been rising since the overnight and will continue to go up a bit more today. Most areas should end up around or slightly over 40 degrees by this afternoon.
Cloudy skies will persist through the day. An occasional spit of rain or a higher elevation flurry will also be possible. These will be most likely, but not necessarily limited to, the late afternoon hours.
Southwest winds of 10-15 mph will turn toward the west late this afternoon and weaken. South winds will take over again by the evening with speeds overnight near or under 5 mph.
Overnight lows will drop into the mid 20s but will start to rise again by the predawn hours.
Sunny skies are expected for Thursday morning and even into the afternoon. South winds will increase, first over higher elevations, and then for everyone. By the late afternoon, wind speeds will be 15-20 mph with gusts of 30-40 mph.
Afternoon highs will be in the low and mid 40s. Temperatures will take a small dip in the evening but rise into the mid and upper 40s overnight.
Temperatures will not be the only thing on the rise Thursday night. Rain chances will increase with steady rain around and after midnight. Winds will also increase further with 40-50 mph gusts. Some higher elevations may see gusts to 55 mph.
By dawn on Friday, most, if not all, of the rain should be to the east. Winds will turn to the west and become lighter temporarily. Temperatures will start a steady decline but should still be in the 40s early in the morning.
Winds will increase again during the midday and afternoon hours of Friday, this time coming from the west and west-southwest. Wind speeds will be around or over 20 mph again with a few gusts hitting 50 mph.
Afternoon temperatures will make it to around 30 degrees. Some lake effect from Lake Erie will make its way into the region. Most areas will see no more than a light coating of snow.

Weather This Weekend and Next Week
Wind speeds will gradually drop Friday night. The wind direction will also slowly shift, ending up back from the south by Saturday morning.
Temperatures Friday night will be in the low 20s. As the wind direction shifts, lingering flurries off Lake Erie will dissipate.
Saturday will be mostly cloudy but generally precipitation free. The south wind will increase to 10-15 mph during the afternoon hours. This will help afternoon highs to reach the mid 30s.
Another wind shift will take place Saturday night with west-northwest winds by Sunday morning. These winds, too, will be blustery with speeds around 20 mph and gusts as high as 40 mph. These winds will continue into the early evening hours.
Temperatures will drop a couple degrees over the course of the day Sunday, starting in the low and mid 30s and ending up around 30 degrees.
Scattered snow showers will be possible, especially near Lake Ontario. Accumulations look minimal at this time, except perhaps right along the shore of Lake Ontario.
Snow showers will continue into Monday with most areas seeing a high in the mid and upper 20s. The snow will gradually become less likely as winds start to turn back toward a southerly direction.
A weather system will be possible on Tuesday. As this time, it looks like snow early, turning to rain as milder air pushes in. Some limited lake effect snow may be possible behind this on Christmas Eve.
At this time, Christmas Day, next Thursday, looks quiet, though there is some agreement on the models showing active weather in the following days.
