The weather will remain quiet across the Finger Lakes for the next couple of days with just some limited light lake effect snow and otherwise partly cloudy skies. A strong cold front Friday will bring widespread snow, followed by wind, hazardous wind chills, and more substantial lake effect.

Wednesday

What: A little early lake effect, then sun and clouds

Impacts: Minor

Some early morning lake effect is ongoing across the eastern Finger Lakes. This should undergo a weakening trend this morning and be mostly out of the region by midday. Outside of the lake effect, expect a mix of sun and clouds.

Winds will be light today with highs near or slightly above 20 degrees for most areas.

Some limited lake effect will likely return late this evening and overnight.

Thursday

What: A little early lake effect, then sun and clouds

Impacts: Minor

Thursday will be very similar to Wednesday. Lingering lake effect early on will dissipate, leaving sun and clouds. Winds will be light and highs will again be around or just over 20 degrees.

Friday

What: Afternoon and evening snow

Impacts: Low

Quiet weather will stretch into Friday morning, but snow will arrive at some point during the afternoon. The snow will move in from west to east, instantly becoming steady. The snow intensity will be light to moderate, but could end with some heavier squalls during the evening.

Snow accumulations Friday through Midnight should be on the order of 1-3 inches. Roads will get a bit slick if left untreated, especially after sunset.

Temperatures will reach the mid and upper 20s with light south and southwest winds.

Friday Overnight through Saturday

What: Cold, wind, and lake effect snow

Impacts: Moderate to High

Overnight Friday night, a cold front will move through. Winds will turn to the northwest and rapidly increase with gusts around 40 mph. Temperatures will quickly fall, reaching the single digits by Saturday morning. The temperature will not recover much on Saturday, with highs not much different than the morning lows.

A spray of lake effect snow southeast of Lake Ontario will accumulate several inches in some locations. The strong winds will create blowing and drifting of the snow.

Perhaps the most concerning will be the wind chills, which will range from -10 to -25 throughout the early morning and daytime hours on Saturday. Frostbite can occur in under 30 minutes at these levels.

Saturday Overnight through Sunday

What: Hazardous conditions gradually ease up

Impacts: Low to Moderate

Winds will remain breezy but not as strong starting Saturday night and continuing through Sunday. Top gusts during this time will be under 30 mph.

Temperatures will be near or below zero for most Sunday morning, then rising to the low 10s Sunday afternoon. Wind chills will be as low as -15 in the morning.

Snow should gradually become lighter and more isolated, but some areas could still see a couple of additional inches. It remains uncertain how long into Sunday the snow may linger.

Next Week

Monday and Tuesday both have a little uncertainty. Most likely, they will end up dry with some sun poking between clouds, but a stray bit of light snow cannot be totally ruled out. Some light mixed precipitation may be possible Wednesday, with a better chance for precipitation next Friday or Saturday.

Temperatures will be warming with highs approaching the 30s by Wednesday and remaining as such through the weekend and into the following week.
