After a quiet and mild start to the weekend, wintry weather will return on Sunday. Tuesday will also need to be watched for some sort of wintry precipitation, but confidence is growing in a period of much warmer weather late next week and beyond.
Friday
What: Sunny skies, mild temperatures
Today’s weather is pretty straightforward: sunshine and temperatures rising. The only detail worth repeating here is that winds will kick up tonight with gusts over 30 mph, especially after midnight. You can see the rest of today’s details in the Weather Planner post from last evening.
Saturday
What: Spits of precipitation
A couple of cold front will pass through the Finger Lakes on Saturday with light spits of precipitation, mainly rain. The first will be early in the morning, with a second during the midday or early afternoon. Temperatures will still get to the mid 40s after starting mild, but will start to lose some ground during the afternoon. The cooling will come from north to south and a few late afternoon snowflakes cannot be ruled out. Winds will be much lighter than Friday night as they gradually turn from the southwest to the north.
Sunday
What: A period of morning snow
Impacts: An inch or so of accumulation
Widespread light snow will pass through the area Sunday morning. Most areas should see accumulations around an inch. The widespread snow should end by afternoon, with a little limited lake effect behind it. North and northwest winds will be steady but not too strong. Temperatures will hover in the low 20s morning and afternoon, then dive into the low 10s with pockets of single-digits Sunday night.
Monday
What: Sunny, but chilly
Monday is expected to be sunny at this point, but there is still a chance for some clouds to build in from the south at some point during the day. With a weather system to our south, cold air will be locked in place with highs only a couple degrees warmer than Sunday. Daytime winds will be light and variable, but nighttime winds will turn blustery from the south.
Tuesday
What: Precipitation likely, but what type?
Impacts: Possible but highly uncertain
The weather system that will be to our south on Monday will turn north on Tuesday, spreading precipitation into our area. It will be a race between the precipitation and warmer air moving in, starting with Monday night’s blustery winds. This may be a situation where precipitation starts as snow, turns to ice briefly, then ends as rain. Stay tuned.
Wednesday
What: Another quiet, mild day
Wednesday looks quiet with sun and clouds. Temperatures have a decent shot at reaching the 40s. This forecast is still far enough away and sandwiched between weather systems, though, so it could need some adjusting.
Late Next Week
Another weather system will probably impact the area late next week. Most likely, this will be rain, but a few outlying models show snow. I am skeptical there will be enough cold air for that, but it bears watching. A large surge of warm air is highly likely to push toward our region by the weekend. This should be the warmest air we’ve seen in 2026 so far, but exactly how warm it gets and how long it lasts are highly uncertain. As is typical for warm surges in March, there will likely be a sharp cut-off between the warm and much cooler air, so watching the position of that boundary will be key.
