Periods of blustery to strong winds will persist through the weekend and into early next week. Multiple weather systems will pass through during this time, leading to fluctuating temperatures and several spurts of precipitation.

Thursday

What: Windy, colder

Impacts: Wind gusts (NW) around 35 mph.

A strong cold front moved through the Finger Lakes overnight, bringing an end to our first extended taste of Spring. Temperatures today will hover in the lower half of the 30s with a few stray flurries from time to time. Wind the strong winds, wind chills will make it feel like the 20s throughout the day. Winds and cloud cover will diminish for a time tonight, then start to increase again as sunrise approaches.

Friday

What: A period of midday snow, followed by rain and snow showers. Windy.

Impacts: An inch or so of snow, mostly melting in the afternoon. Wind gusts (S) 40-45 mph.

A new weather system will push a warm front toward the Finger Lakes during the midday hours Friday. A band of snow will accompany the front, likely putting down around an inch of accumulation on average. South winds will increase with the front, pushing afternoon temperatures into the upper 30s and low 40s. Precipitation will be on and off during the afternoon and evening with snow turning to rain, then back to snow. Nighttime wind gusts will be on the order of 25-35 mph from the southwest with overnight lows around 30 degrees.

Saturday

What: A few early snow showers. Remaining windy, especially in the morning and midday.

Impacts: Wind gusts (NW) up to 35 mph.

Saturday will not be too different than today. Precipitation will be limited to a few stray snow showers, mainly in the morning hours. Winds will be blustery with gusts up to 35 mph. Afternoon highs will reach the mid 30s. The wind will start to decrease during the afternoon hours and may become mostly calm by evening. Overnight lows will fall to the mid 20s.

Sunday

What: Morning or midday snow, then windy.

Impacts: An inch or so of snow, mostly melting in the afternoon. Wind gusts (S) 40-50 mph late.

Just as Thursday and Saturday will be similar, so too will Friday and Sunday. Another warm front will push toward the region, leading to another period of snow. Again, an inch or so should accumulate, then melt during the day as temperatures rise and winds pick up. Unlike Friday, winds and temperatures will continue to increase into the nighttime hours, reaching around 50 degrees overnight. Some wind gusts could reach 50 mph Sunday night, coming in from the south.

Monday

What: Rain, possibly thunderstorms. Windy.

Impacts: Severe thunderstorm potential uncertain at this time, but possible due to the strong background winds.

Strong south winds will likely persist into Monday, boosting temperatures further up through the 50s and possibly toward 60 degrees. A strong cold front will eventually move through, possibly with thunderstorms if the timing and atmospheric conditions are right. Temperatures will quickly fall behind the front.

Tuesday and Beyond

The weather pattern we are in is very typical for early Spring with wide fluctuations in temperatures and plenty of wind. This will likely continue next week as well, with cool weather mid-week and warmer weather ending the week. Winds may calm down for a day or two but will likely increase again with the warmer weather later in the week. There is no real reason to think this will not continue into the following week as well.
