A pair of weather systems, one Friday and another Sunday, will have similar impacts on the Finger Lakes. Saturday should be dry in between, with quiet weather early next week as well.

Friday

What: Increasing rain, steady by afternoon

Impacts: Rain amounts between one-quarter and one-third of an inch

Rain will gradually increase from northwest to southeast through the morning and midday hours. Several hours of steady rain are expected to persist deep into the afternoon before tapering to showers late in the day. Rainfall amounts will not be overly heavy, despite the steady nature of the rainfall. South winds ahead of the low pressure system responsible for the rain will be blustery at times as they boost temperatures into the mid and upper 40s and a few low 50s. A cold front late will turn winds, allowing cool air to move in from the north tonight.

Saturday

What: Rather cloudy early, then some breaks of sun

No precipitation is expected on Saturday as a small area of high pressure between low pressure systems passes through. The morning will likely turn out cloudy, but some breaks of sunshine are likely in the afternoon. Cloud will rethicken late in the day and overnight. Winds will be light and variable before turning to the south and becoming steady after sunset. Afternoon highs will reach the low 40s for most. After a brief dip in the evening, temperatures will rise into the mid 40s overnight.

Sunday

What: Increasing rain, steady by afternoon

Impacts: Rain amounts between one-third to one-half of an inch

A very similar weather system to Friday will come through on Sunday. Rain will increase through the morning and midday from northwest to southeast, becoming steady for the afternoon. There may be slightly heavier rain on Sunday with up to a half inch of rainfall and a few localized downpours. Temperatures will be highly variable across the region, with afternoon highs well into the 50s across the southern half and stuck in the 40s to the north. Any slight variation in the path of the parent low pressure system could change where the cut-off between warm and cool air sets up.

Monday

What: A few snow showers

Impacts: Locally a light coating of snow.

Cool air will build back in behind Sunday’s low with highs stuck in the 30s on Monday. Some moisture on the back side of the low will result in some minor snow showers across the region. Travel is not expected to be impacted, and only a light coating will accumulate in some areas before melting a short time later. North and northwest winds may be a bit blustery in the afternoon.

Tuesday

What: Clouds, some sun

Tuesday will be rather similar to Saturday, with clouds, some breaks of sun, and highs in the low 40s. Winds will be a bit steadier from the west and southwest, but still not overly strong.

Late Next Week & Beyond

An active weather pattern is expected, with a weather system on Thursday and possibly two more between Friday and the weekend. Thursday’s system looks like rain, but the other ones are too distant and too borderline temperature-wise to tell. As we head into April the following week, there is a large spread in possibilities on the models, but a general warming trend is showing.
